Safeway and going green

August 13th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

So I got a happy surprise when I went grocery shopping at Safeway this past weekend.  I’ve been trying to bring in my own cloth bags and the checkout person asked how many I brought.  I had four bags and it turns out they credit you 3 cents per bag you bring with you.  It’s not much but it was kind of a nice surprise.  I do it more because we have a ton of plastic bags.  We try to reuse them as our trash bags but we still have a huge overflow of excess plastic bags.  The only downside I guess with the credit is customers could bring in a bunch of small cloth bags (the ones I bring are on the larger side).  Although I guess lugging a ton of cloth bags is a pain.

Now my biggest problem is remembering to put the bags back in my car after unloading the groceries.  I have been getting better at remembering to take them into the store with me.  For awhile I’d always forget them in the car.
