Give the Gift of Reading-Children’s Books Shopping List & Amazon Gift Certificate Giveaway

November 6th, 2010 by Debbie's World of Books

Thanks to everyone that submitted their suggestions of the best children’s books that they would suggest buying as a gift for those young readers out there. Download the printable PDF list.

I love reading and if you are reading this I assume you do as well.  Well, let’s help support all those bookstores out there and help encourage everyone to buy at least one book as a gift this holiday season.  Check out the full shopping list below. One of the suggestions came in with the great idea of pairing a book with something else as a holiday gift so here are some ideas of what you could buy along with a book.  See the bottom of the post for the giveaway information.  Also keep an eye out for other shopping lists and giveaways in the coming weeks.  You can also check out my children’s book blog, Munchkin’s Book Journey, to see what my 3 year old is reading.

If you buy…

You might want to pair it with a train set.

If you buy…

Why not get the Llama Llama plush doll or since the book is about his first day at school a really cool lunch box, back pack or pencil case.

If you buy…

This book has a glittery line that runs through it so why not pair it with some glitter glue and construction paper to draw pictures on and use the glue.

If you buy…

There is now an animated film version.  Why not pick up the DVD and let them compare the stories.

If you buy…

Why not also buy a kids watering pail and some seeds so they can plant their own “magic farm” come spring time.

If you buy…

Since she’s going to a tea party and pinking daddy up with stickers, glitter and tape why not pair this up with a tea set or an arts & craft set of glitter, glue, stickers, etc.

Full List of Suggestions

Ages 1-3

Ages 4-8

Ages 9-12

I hope you have actually read through the list and got some good ideas of holiday gifts for those young readers.  To help spread the word about this project I’m giving away a $20 Amazon gift card.

The Rules

  • This is really counting on the honor system here but leave me a comment about either someone you are going to buy a book for as a gift (it doesn’t have to be a child) or someone to who you have mentioned this shopping list to (be it a mother, friend, fellow blogger, random stranger in a book store…) and your contact information.
  • Open to anyone who can use an Amazon gift card.
  • Ends December 25, 2010.

Extra entries (some people love ’em, some people hate ’em so it’s up to you)

Since the point is to spread the word as much as possible about this project here are some ways to get extra entries:

  • If you advertised the original post about giving the gift of reading then leave a comment with the link (+3 entries)
  • If you advertise this post (Tweet, Facebook, link to side bar, etc.) leave the link (+1 for each link)
  • If you dedicate a post on your blog to this shopping list and this project leave the link in the comments) (+5 entries)

I will probably my two oldest nephew’s manga for Christmas, because they struggle with reading and I find that giving them comics helps, especially since they re-read them frequently. I also have been looking for a book for my 7 year old niece as well as my sister. I love to read so I love finding just the right type of book to encourage them to as well.

My little bro is such a pain to buy for :). But, while he is no longer a child he does love the art of a lot of the classic picture book’s (like Witch, Witch, Come to My Party by Arden Druce), so I may go for one of Carle’s for him, though maybe I won’t go with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but one of his less known ones.

I tweeted the link but that was all that would fit unfortunately – your share this at bottom of post doesn’t seem to be working right for me.

  21. Mrs. DeRaps

Every year, I either give gifts that are made locally (in Maine) or I give a book (or a bookstore gift card). My family is a pack of wild and crazy readers, and it’s them that I have to thank for instilling in me a love of books and literature. So, I pay them all back with books and bookish gift cards as Christmas presents. Also, my husband and I have started the tradition of buying a book for our niece every Christmas and writing a message to her. She keeps them all at our house and we read them when she spends the night. I’ll look at your list for suggestions for this year’s annual book for my 7 year-old niece. Thanks for the tips and the giveaway!

Awesome list of books. I’m planning on buying my younger brother a book this holiday season instead of the usual electronic gadget or video game. I’m thinking about either buying him a book from one of the book series he follows or a book related to something he likes such as Star Wars.

I always give books as Christmas gifts. My friends all get books in genres they like – reading book blogs comes in handy for ideas. And even when I got my niece toys, she got books. Not that she’s eleven she’s pickier, but I’m trying Percy Jackson series this year.
