Vampire Academy SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t read the entire Vampire Academy story this contains spoilers as to how that series ends.

Summary from Goodreads.com: The first book in Richelle Mead’s brand-new teen fiction series – set in the same world as Vampire Academy.

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive – this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

I absolutely love the Vampire Academy series and it rates as one of my top picks so I was both excited and nervous when I heard Richelle Mead was doing a spin off series.  I had my doubts when I heard Sydney was going to be the main character.  Yes, she had spunk and I did like her but somehow it just did not seem like it would be as exciting without a Moroi or dhampir as the main character.  I was completely wrong.  Sydney’s character was wonderful!  We learn a lot more about her history, how the alchemists work and it was hilarious watching her try to fit in at your typical high school.  The best part of this book is that we see much more of Adrian!!!  I loved Dimitri and I was rooting for him to end up with Rose because they just belonged together but Adrian also had a soft spot in my heart.  I really wanted to see him find his true love.  Adrian is still up to his usual antics of partying, smoking and drinking but we also get to see more of his serious side and watch as he’s forced to gain some maturity.  For the Vampire Academy fans some of our favorite characters do make appearances and I was happy to see Eddie is also back and playing a larger role.

The action was well paced and although it was somewhat predictable the little twists and turns were fun to read.  As expected in a first book of a new series there was quite a bit of set up for the coming books.  I really can’t wait to see what happens between Eddie, Jill, Sydney and Adrian.   I’m also curious to see more of Sydney’s family and how she is going to deal with all the history and drama going on there.  I think Vampire Academy fans won’t be disappointed in this new spin off and I certainly cannot wait for book 2!
