Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin

Source: Borrowed from the library

I have to admit to having never read a Pete the Cat book before but one day my two kids came home singing “My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons” over and over.  Turns out their classes went to preview the Scholastic book sale and saw this book and their teacher played the song to them.  They insisted they had to have this book but sadly by time I had a chance to go to the book sale they had sold out of it.  My kids were so disappointed I had to go find it at the library.  It is a great book and I highly recommend it to all parents.  Both my 6 year old and my 3 year old love it.

Pete the Cat is going along wearing his favorite coat with four groovy buttons.  One by one the buttons pop off but does he get upset?  Goodness no!  He just keeps singing his song about his groovy buttons.  It’s a great lesson for the kids about not getting upset when something goes wrong or breaks.  We have used the “do we get upset? Goodness no!” in everyday situations and it’s helped.  The other nice thing about this book was that each time a button would pop off there would be a little equation like “4-1=3” groovy buttons.  So it’s a nice little intro to subtraction.

The other fun thing about this book is that you can go to: http://www.harpercollinschildrens.com/feature/petethecat and actually listen to the song that goes with the book.  We also watched the short videos for the other books and ordered several of the other books for my kids.  I even got the cutest thank you note from my 6 year old thanking me for bringing home Pete the Cat books for them.

Here is the His Four Groovy Buttons song but warning it may get stuck in your head!
