About the book:

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

My Review:

I went back to read my review of book 1 in the series, Throne of Glass, and I loved it so I’m not sure what happened that I hadn’t read the rest of the series yet. I’m so glad I finally did and it’s a test in patience even writing this review because I want to go start book 3 ASAP.

It’s been about 3.5 years since I read book 1 so my memory of all the details were a bit fuzzy other than remembering that I loved Chaol. I loved watching the dance Chaol and Celaena danced around each other before finally giving into their feelings. Chaol deserves some happiness and how can you not love a guy who brings you chocolate cake when you most need it?

Celaena’s character was a lot darker in this book than I recall her being in book 1. The journey of what she goes through in order to come to the realizations at the end of the book is heart wrenching. I waffled back and forth between pity for her, frustration or her actions and anger at her behavior at times but I still love her character.

The story itself will have you turning the pages as fast as you can and wishing you could read faster and yet still savor Sarah J. Maas’s writing style. There were quite a few surprises in this book and I love when a story does that. The one good thing I can say about having put this series aside for so long is that now there are so many books I can binge read! If you haven’t picked up this series yet you definitely have to. It’s got it all – romance, heart pounding excitement, conspiracies and more!
