About the book:

From the author of the New York Times bestselling Testing trilogy comes a sweeping new fantasy series, perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Sarah J. Maas.

Twins Carys and Andreus were never destined to rule Eden. With their older brother next in line to inherit the throne, the future of the kingdom was secure.

But appearances—and rivals—can be deceiving. When Eden’s king and crown prince are killed by assassins, Eden desperately needs a monarch, but the line of succession is no longer clear. With a ruling council scheming to gain power, Carys and Andreus are faced with only one option—to take part in a Trial of Succession that will determine which one of them is worthy of ruling the kingdom.

As sister and brother, Carys and Andreus have always kept each other safe—from their secrets, from the court, and from the monsters lurking in the mountains beyond the kingdom’s wall. But the Trial of Succession will test the bonds of trust and family.

With their country and their hearts divided, Carys and Andreus will discover exactly what each will do to win the crown. How long before suspicion takes hold and the thirst for power leads to the ultimate betrayal?

My Thoughts:

I love Joelle Charbonneau’s Testing trilogy so when I saw she had a new book out I had to read it. It took a bit to get into it but once it got going I read it in almost one sitting. I really enjoyed Carys’s character and while she initially comes across as a royal PITA once we saw underneath her outward facing mask I really felt bad for her. She lives her entire life protecting her brother and then in my opinion totally gets shafted.

The story line is intriguing though a lot of it is predictable. There are a few characters that I can’t wait to see how they turn the story in the next book. The main turn off to me was Carys’s twin brother, Andreus. I thought this was going to be more of a twins standing together against all odds but it’s really Carys protecting an idiot of a brother. I even ranted to a co-worker over how easily swayed Andreus is and how a woman can basically bat her eyes at him and he falls for her and lets her lead him about. I’m not sure if he is meant to be a true villain in the series. Initially I thought he was just going to be the misguided guy who was duped by a pretty face but he’s so unlikeable to me at this point that it would take a lot to redeem him.

Still I cannot wait to see what happens next and am rooting for Carys!
