Should Mark Spitz have been invited to the Beijing Olympics?

August 14th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

So for the past couple days I’ve been hearing about how Mark Spitz was upset he wasn’t officially invited to the Beijing Olympics to watch Phelps try to break his record.  One article quotes him saying, “I never got invited,” he told Agence France-Presse in Hong Kong. “You don’t go to the Olympics just to say, ‘I am going to go.’ Especially because of who I am. I am going to sit there and watch Michael Phelps break my record anonymously? That’s almost demeaning to me. It is not almost — it is.”

Granted it would have been nice for him to officially have been invited but his attitude is a total turn off for me.  If he wanted to go so badly why didn’t he go on his own?  He doesn’t mention not being able to get tickets.  He just complains that he should automatically have been invited.  I would even describe him at pouting like a little baby.

Like one DJ on the radio mentioned if he had gone on his own it probably would have been an even bigger story that he went there on his own to support Phelps.

At this point I think he should just grow up and behave like a rational adult.
