Book of Lost Things by John Connelly and Pretty Face by Mary Hogan

October 12th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

I read this two books over the past week or so.  Neither was that great so I didn’t want to spend too much time on them.  The Book of Lost Things was about a boy who after his mother dies enters a fantasy world where an evil creature tries to trick him into sacrificing his new baby step-brother in order to become king of this fantasy realm and extend the creature’s life.  It was kind of interesting that the book is interspersed with tales from various characters that are spins of tales like Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.  But usually they are darker and more violent than the stories as we know them.

Pretty Face is about a teen age girl, Hayley, who is overweight and her mom is obsessed with thinning her down.  In desperation her parents send her to Italy to live with the family of her mom’s friend.  While there Hayley learns how to really enjoy life and in the process starts to lose weight without really trying.  She also meets a boy who loves her for who she is and not what she looks like.  This was a YA book so I wasn’t expecting much from it.  It’s a cute but I think totally unrealistic story.
