The Smart One and the Pretty One by Claire La Zeibnik

October 30th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.  It was a really quick but fun read.

This book is about two sister’s, Lauren and Ava.  Ava is the responsible lawyer sister who lives in LA near their parents where as Lauren is the flighty one that has collection agencies after her, gets fired from her job and evicted from her apartment in NY.  She decides to fly home from New York back to LA after all this happens because their mother gets diagnosed with breast cancer.  While everyone comments on how alike the two sisters look Lauren is the fashionable sister and Ava is the dowd who doesn’t believe she looks like Lauren.  She thinks she is more of the “ugly” duckling.

While living back at home with her parents Lauren finds a contract her mom made betrothing Ava and the son of a friend, Russell, when the children were all really young.

Ava ambushes Lauren with a debt consolidator counselor and makes Lauren feel like she’s being attacked.  So in retaliation she contacts Robert and blindsides Ava with this at a dinner.  Russell turns out to be a pretty nice guy and is a product manager for a women’s clothing company.

Stop here if you don’t want spoilers.

So Lauren decides 1-her sister needs a make over and 2-her sister needs a boyfriend.   So she proceeds to try and set Russell and Ava up for real.  After many fiascos and misunderstandings Ava and Russell do end up together and Ava realizes that she really is as pretty as Lauren if she just took more care with her appearance.  Lauren in the mean time has a fling with a guy she meets at the hospital while taking her mom for chemo.  The guy is also their with his mother and at first appears to be a jerk.  Eventually they end up having sex together and then Lauren finds out he actually have a live in girlfriend back in NY.  So Ava and Russell get their happy ending and Lauren being Lauren manages to bounce back.  Pretty predictable ending but a fun read.
