The Digital Plague by Jeff Somers

October 31st, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this one a 2 stars out of 5.

The story follows Avery Cates, one of the most well known criminals in NYC.  One day Cates finds himself kidnapped but instead of being killed they slice his neck open, do something and then seal him back up and let go.  Soon the people he interacts with begin dying in a horrifying matter.

He soon finds out he is patient 0 with a disease designed to kill humans.  There are little nanobots in him that spread to others and basically eat the body from the inside out.  Cates ends up working with a couple cops and a techie trying to figure out who did this and why.

Stop here if you don’t want spoilers…

Eventually Cates finds it’s a guy he used to deal with who was shot and Cates left for dead who put this disease in him.  The guy was pissed and was hearing a voice in his head that this was the way for revenge.  I never figured out if there really was someone talking to this guy or if he was just loony.  The story as a whole was strange and the ending sucks.  They end up beating the disease.  Turns out the person who designed the nanobots built in a safeguard that if he was killed then the nanobots turned themselves off.  So of course they manage to kill this guy.  Cates eventually gets taken by the cops and transferred some where that is supposed to be pretty miserable to live.  The ending was totally anti-climatic and I think this book was a waste of time.
