Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris

November 24th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this one 3 out of 5 stars.  This was book 6 in the southern vampire series.  It wasn’t bad but not one of my favorites.  Maybe because not enough Eric in it.  Sookie is having her typical bad luck.  Her brother, Jason, comes to her for help because his were girlfriend, Crystal, has miscarried.  She manages to convince Dr. Ludwig to go treat her since Crystal is afraid to go to a mortal doctor.  Then Mr. Catalaides, the vampire queen’s lawyer, shows up saying that she needs to go to New Orleans to claim her cousin Hadley’s stuff.  It turns out he had sent a messenger a few days earlier but she never got the message.  To top things off Debbie Pelt’s parents and sister show up to question her about Debbie’s disapperance.  Sookie refuses to talk any more to them saying enough is enough.

On the bright side Quinn stops by to ask Sookie out on a date.  They go to see a show but on their way back to the car they are attacked by newly turned weres.  They arrange a second date but that gets canceled when Mr. Caladaides shows up telling her they have to leave for New Orleans.  After hearing that he had sent his niece with a message Sookie gets a bad feeling about an earlier night when she thought she heard someone outside her house.  It turns out Mr. Catalaides niece was killed, chopping in half by some sort of sword.  They can’t figure out who committed the murder so they leave for New Orleans.  Sookie leaves Quinn a message about where she is going.  She also lets Bill know since Bill had asked to go with her to New Orleans.

When she gets to New Orleans she meets Amelia, the witch who was renting an apartment to her cousin Hadley.  After a few more misfortunes which always seem to happen to Sookie Quinn shows up, Sookie meets the Queen and then ends up getting caught up in a plot by the queen’s new husband to get rid of his wife.  She helps the Queen out and ends up on her good side.  The Queen’s body guard, Andre, ends up killing her husband.  Probably the worst part of this trip was finding out that Bill was sent by the Queen to seduce her in order to get Sookie under her power.  Eric showed up in New Orleans as well and forces Bill to confess to her.  Sookie is heart broken but things seem to be going well with Quinn.

Oh and I forgot it turns out it was Debbie Pelt’s family who was sending weres after Sookie.

I just started Definitely Dead and have been reading the series in order. Did I miss something? I don’t remember reading anything about the cousin Hadley?

You know, I was thinking the same thing. I don’t recall reading about Hadley before this book either. I thought I might have just missed it or forgot about it. Not sure what the deal is.

I just found out that the Hadley story is in a short-story collection called Bite. I was feeling a bit confused, too. Now I have to find this book somewhere…

Oh! Thanks for the info Mary. I was wondering what I missed.

I read the extra info in bite and its not much but it just tell you her cousin Hadley was a run away and that they used to be close when they were little but sookie hadnt seen her since she ran out on her family thats probs why sookie never mentioned her. She was a druggie and ended up a vampire.

Guess I won’t bother with it. Just nice to know who she is.
