Donate a book for children

November 30th, 2008 by Debbie's World of Books

I went to the Borders in Fremont, CA today and they were running a donate a book program for OneChild which helps provide clothing, school supplies and books for under privileged children.  I usually try to help these causes since if you follow this blog I obviously love to read.

I remember when I was still in high school I thought it was sad when I went to trade in some books at a used book store and they said they couldn’t take most of them because there wasn’t a demand among young adults for as many books.  Over the years their children’s/YA section got smaller and smaller.  I’m hoping these days there are more children reading thanks to series like Harry Potter and Twilight and hopefully some of them are enjoying classic series like Nancy Drew, Baby Sitter’s Club, Sweet Valley Twins/High.

I would just like to encourage everyone to find a way to help spread the joy of reading whether it be donating a book to a local organization or volunteering at a story time some where.

Some of my daughter’s favorite baby books have been:

Brown Bear Brown Bear by Eric Carle

What Does Baby Say by Karen Katz

Counting Kisses by Karen Katz

Noisy Farm from DK Publishing

Books I loved when I was younger:

Sweet Valley Twins and High series

Babysitter’s Club series

The classic Nancy Drew yellow bound series

Black Stallion series

Box Car Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner

Ramona Quimby series

Amelia Bedelia series
