Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I absolutely love this book and would give it 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book way back in high school but it is probably my favorite book of all time and it seems to be coming up rather often lately.  I finally saw the recent movie adaptation with Keira Knightly and was surprised that I thought it was pretty good.  I loved the BBC version so I did not expect to like this one.  Another surprise was that I liked any adaptation since most movies don’t live up to my expectations if I already read the book.

For those that don’t know the book revolves around the Bennett family with Mrs. Bennett determined to get her 5 daughters married and preferably to wealthy men.  Her eldest, Jane, supposed to be the handsomest of the sisters and Mrs. Bennett hopes when the wealthy and eligible Mr. Bingley moves into Netherfield that they will naturally fall in love and get married.  Things are moving along nicely until Bingley’s friend, Mr. Darcy, who believes himself above the rest of the inhabitants of the town convinces him to move back to London.  Lizzie, the second eldest, is almost as fair but is much livelier and outspoken takes an instant dislike to Mr. Darcy after he makes an unkind remark about her and due to his arrogant behavior towards everyone outside of his party.

As is expected Jane and Mr. Bingley eventually work things out and get married and surprisingly Lizzie and Mr. Darcy end up falling in love and also marrying.

I’m not normally one to like the classics but this book was so much fun to read.  I love Mrs. Bennett’s flightiness and reading about Mr. Darcy trying to over come his own snobbishness to admit he loves Lizzie.  If you haven’t read this I highly recommend you do so as soon as possible!

Give the adaptation of the BBC’s North and South a try too. I think it’s the best thing the BBC have done, even better than P&P (although not quite so frothy and funny)
