Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz

January 16th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this one a 4 out 5 stars.

Description from De La Cruz’s website:

Within New York City’s most elite families, there lurks a secret society of celebrated Americans whose ancestors sailed on the Mayflower. They are the powerful and the wealthy—and in fact, they are not human. They are the Blue Bloods, an ancient group of vampires.

Schuyler Van Alen has never fit in at Duchesne, her prestigious New York City private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapidated mansion. Schuyler is a loner—and happy that way.

But when she turns fifteen, Schuyler’s life changes dramatically. She has a mosaic of blue veins on her arms, and craves raw meat. The death of a popular girl from Duchesne is surrounded by a mystery that haunts her. And strangest off all, Jack Force, the most popular boy in school, is showing a sudden interest in her.

Schuyler wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?

I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down until I finished.  It entranced me along the lines of the Twilight and Vampire Academy series.  I was happy not to be disappointed as I have been in looking for other series along the vampire line.  Schuyler’s and Oliver’s true relationship was a surprise and the turn Dylan takes was a shock.  I cannot wait to read the next book to see where these story lines go.

Stop here if you do not want any spoilers.

My biggest curiosity is to see where the relationship between Schuyler and Jack Force will go and how that will affect her relationship with Oliver.  I have a feeling she will end up with Oliver in the end.  It will also be interesting to see if Schuyler’s mother will eventually choose to awake.  I wonder where Charles Force will end up.  He seems so bitter for an angel that willingly gave it all up.

you are a reading machine! I didn’t read your spoilers, since I just ordered this book! I’m really looking forward to reading it! I admit, I’m totally hooked on the young adult vampire books lately!

I think I am getting this author mixed up with another one. When I saw the name, I didn’t plan on looking into the book. Then you compared it to the intensity of TWILIGHT and I looked her up. Yes, I mixed her name with another author! I’ll see if I can find an audio of this book.

You should do a post rating all the vampire books you’ve read like a top ten list. That’d be cool.

I got up to book 3 before I lost track of the books. I’d love to get my own copy because it is a great story. The thing I enjoyed most from it was that the vampires came from the Lost Colony. I love early american history and liked how Melissa encorporated that into the story. It’s very original.

I like the idea of tying them in with the Mayflower and all that, very interesting. And how can I pass up a book so good you can’t put it down?
