Marked by PC Cast

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Description from Barnes and Noble: Enter the dark, magical world of The House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird has just been Marked as a fledgling vampyre and joins the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change–and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint her human ex-boyfriend. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny–with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

I would not rate this book as highly as Vampire Academy or Twilight but it was still a good read.  It’s hard not to like Zoey and her good girl yet not going to let anyone push her around attitude.  Aphrodite (and who can like someone who picks that as her own name) needed some serious butt kicking and I’m glad she got what was owed her.  Erik seems like a nice guy but you do kind of have to wonder about a guy who would date Aphrodite.  Being a fan of Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series it was interesting to come across another series where vampyres are known to the rest of the world and are pretty much allowed to live in harmony, at least from what I could tell in book 1.  I’m interested to see what happens in book 2 since Aphrodite had that one vision in which Neferet seemed to scare the heck out of her.  So it seems like she might not be such a good guy after all.  Especially with these ghosts of supposedly dead students wandering around.  Guess I will have to wait and see.
