How do you choose what do buy from your local bookstore? Do you have a list, or just browse? What is the selection in your book store like? Do you find what you’re looking for? Do you feel pressured to buy the kind of books the store makes prominent? (question courtesy of MizB)

It really varies for me.  I have a list of authors that I love and am always looking to see if they have a new book out.  If they do that is usually the book  I will pick out.  Other than that I rarely go in with a list.  The books I find on other blogs I will usually request from the library.

So when my authors have no new books out I am really into browsing and get sucked in by displays in the book store.  I’ll head first to the new releases display and go through all those books.  If I don’t find anything there I go to the Fiction Favorites display and see what’s there, then move on to the buy 2 get 3rd free display and if I have time I’ll roam through the YA section, romance section and science fiction/fantasy section to see what is on display.  I rarely just look at the books on the shelves that don’t have their covers facing forward.  So if a book doesn’t have a cover that grabs me I usually won’t pick it up.

I try to limit myself to one book a visit unless I end up buying from the buy 2 get 3rd free shelf.  So as I browse I write down the books that interest me and then see if the library has them.

I’ll admit I am an ardent Borders lover so of course they have a great selection and I can usually find what I want.  The other store I frequent is Half Priced Books and being a used book store they usually don’t have what I want but you can put in requests.  Then they will call you if that book arrives which is really nice.

Those 2 for 3 displays are fatal – there’s usually one book I definitely want, and maybe another and then I just have to find a third.

    I would have a hard time resisting a 3 for 2 sale!

I love 2 for 3 sales. Chapters here is having a 4 for $10 sale right now. I came home with 16 new books on Friday.

Did you say, “Sale”? That is what gets me every time.

4 for $10? That is awesome! I wish we had sales like that.

BooksPlease, I have the same problem. They usually have one I really want, one I was looking at and then I’m scouring the tables for a third. It always gets me when they put like book 2 or 3 of a series I wanted to check out and then I’m forced to go get book 1 at regular price.

Yup I’m the same. Here is mine

Sale – yep, those do grab my attention. One book a visit. Lordy, you have will power. I never leave without at least five new books.

    My post is up now.
