Stephen King said what about Twilight?

February 3rd, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I read this article on MSNBC in which Stephen King says that Stephenie Meyer “can’t write” but he does understand the appeal of Twilight to young girls.  I disagree that Meyer’s can’t write although I know there are plenty of Twilight detractors out there.  But in the end I am all for a series that is getting millions of young (and adult!) people to read.  I really think reading has become a dying art among the younger generations so I am glad for series like Twilight and Harry Potter that are opening up the wonders of books to a new generation.

I disagree with SK too. Because she can write, almost everyone in a literate society can. She just can’t write well.

I agree to a point…the Twilight books aren’t literary masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination!! But, they’re good books, and lots of people have enjoyed them.

I agree Katie. This goes back to one of my postings that I don’t read books looking for grammar, or use of interesting writing devices, etc. For me it’s more of if the story grabs me and Twilight totally did.

I like the twilight series, but I do agree with SK she’s not a great writer, she’s good but not great. Now JK Rowling on the other hand, she’s amazing!

That was too tacky of him to say…not nice at all.

I read King’s comments too. For Twilight, the writing itself was geared toward teenage girls, I think. Also, the story was mostly told from a teenage girl’s perspective. I’m not sure if King thought about that before he made his comments. The appeal of Twilight was the entertaining story, not so much the way it was told.
