Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

March 8th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Description from Battle Royale, a high-octane thriller about senseless youth violence, is one of Japan’s best-selling – and most controversial – novels. As part of a ruthless program by the totalitarian government, ninth-grade students are taken to a small isolated island with a map, food, and various weapons. Forced to wear special collars that explode when they break a rule, they must fight each other for three days until only one “winner” remains. The elimination contest becomes the ultimate in must-see reality television.

I picked up this book because I loved The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I heard this Japanese book was very similar to it or The Hunger Games was similar to it.  Battle Royale wasn’t bad but I much preferred The Hunger Games.  This one had way too many characters to keep track of (there were over 40 students) and there were too many mini story lines coming out as each student is killed.  It was kind of funny in a morbid sort of way that some of the weapons the students are given are forks or sticks.  Talk about raw deal when other students are given machine guns.  If you enjoyed The Hunger Games and have time on your hands(Battle Royale is over 600 pages long) this is a nice complement to it.

aww I can’t believe you didn’t enjoy this so much I love this book. I have to agree though there are quite a few names to remember but I myself didn’t have a problem with that, I just really liked the story but to each his/her own. :D

Have you seen the movies by any chance?

I didn’t dislike it but I preferred The Hunger Games. :) I haven’t watched the movie yet. Someone else in my book club said she didn’t like it but I’m curious to see it.

I have them and started watching the like two years ago but…the acting just was horrible so I’m putting that off for a WHILE hehe

I still haven’t read the hunger games but if you say they are similar and the hunger games is better, then I HAVE to give it a try. :D

LOL. Yeah, The Hunger Games is much shorter and with less characters. It’s part of a series though and the next part isn’t out until like august or september.

Oh yeah I heard about that. Hmm I really need to get my hands on a copy of it soon. :D I’ll probably end up checking out of my local library.
