The Luxe by Anna Godbersen

April 9th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I would rate this book as 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Description from Beautiful sisters Elizabeth and Diana Holland rule Manhattan’s social scene. Or so it appears. When the girls discover their status among New York City’s elite is far from secure, suddenly everyone—from the backstabbing socialite Penelope Hayes, to the debonair bachelor Henry Schoonmaker, to the spiteful maid Lina Broud—threatens Elizabeth’s and Diana’s golden future.

With the fate of the Hollands resting on her shoulders, Elizabeth must choose between family duty and true love. But when her carriage overturns near the East River, the girl whose glittering life lit up the city’s gossip pages is swallowed by the rough current. As all of New York grieves, some begin to wonder whether life at the top proved too much for this ethereal beauty, or if, perhaps, someone wanted to see Manhattan’s most celebrated daughter disappear…

In a world of luxury and deception, where appearance matters above everything and breaking the social code means running the risk of being ostracized forever, five teenagers lead dangerously scandalous lives. This thrilling trip to the age of innocence is anything but innocent.

First off, I have to say I love the covers of this series and it is what drew me to read the book.  I found myself surprised that I actually enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one.  I say surprised because when I was about halfway through I didn’t think I wanted to even finish the book.  The main thing that kept me going was that I hate not finishing a book so I kept reading.  I am so glad I did.  The second half of the book kept me hooked and now I can’t wait to read the sequel to find out what happens with Diana, Henry and Penelope.   I initially thought Diana was a pain in the behind but she redeems herself in the end in my eyes and I do hope she can find happiness.  I really hope Penelope gets what is due her and while I can sort of understand Lina’s, Elizabeth’s former lady’s maid, jealous feelings I still dislike her intensely.  I’m curious what the future books hold for them as well.

I have been curious about this series for a while, but still haven’t read it. I might have to get the first book from the library at some point and time!

Yeah, like I said the beginning was a struggle but it picks up.

I read the first two in the series over the weekend. I agree with having to decide whether to finish or not as well, but ultimately was glad I continued. Not sure what it was that made me feel it was dragging in parts. I am about finished with book 3, and #4 is out later this year.
