Favorite Book Highlight: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

April 25th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

With all the great books I’ve had to read I haven’t had much time to re-read a lot of my favorite books so I haven’t blogged about them.  But there are definitely some that deserve a highlight on my blog.  Today’s highlight is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Description: According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for “social”) has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he’s always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers–until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy’s skin, causing his world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser.

I believe this book was targeted at high schoolers but I love it and have read it many times.  You meet Ponyboy and his older brothers, Soda and Darry.  Since their parents died Darry has been trying to take care of the family so Soda and Ponyboy won’t be sent to foster homes.  They also have their second family made up of their close buddies-Johnny, Dallas, Two-Bit and Steve.  It’s touching to see how these boys while not related by blood have formed a bond that ties them together like brothers.  The ending had me in tears but was well worth it.  It’s a pretty short book so please check it out!

It also was made into a movie back in the 80s and talk about your all star cast.  It had Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid!), Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane.
