Big Screen Kindle for newspapers?

May 4th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

Saw this article on CNN about a new Kindle with a larger screen designed to be easier to read newspapers and magazines.  I’m curious what it will look like and how heavy it would be?  I would think it would still have to appeal to book readers since I can’t imagine how many newspaper/magazine readers would want to shell out a lot of money just to read electronic papers.  Since I’m not a big news reader I could be wrong.  I tend to stick with MSNBC and CNN.

I saw that too…. I can’t imagine holding a screen that big. They’d be quite cool wouldn’t they?

I’ll have to wait and see how it looks. I do like my original Kindle and think v2 looks even better so who knows.

To tell you the truth, I’ve never used a kindle before. Are they good?

I like it especially when I am commuting on the train or airplane because I go through my books pretty quickly and used to have to pack 4 or 5 books. Now I just have to take my Kindle. It’s easy to read and I love the wireless functionality. I’ve purchased books while waiting at the train station. The only issue I had was with the next page button but I saw on the Kindle 2 they addressed this issue.

It might be silly, but a big motivation for me wanting a kindle was being able to read the newspapers in bed. A laptop is too bulky and papers are messy. I also love being able to turn the pages with one hand while holding the device, which you definitely can’t do with a newspaper. I like the size of my kindle 2, but wish that there were a bigger selection of newspapers (and that they were cheaper or came with the perks of a regular subscription, which I’m also maintaining for that reason). If this new kindle for newspapers and magazines somehow limits the availability of papers/periodicals for other kindles, I’ll be most upset.

I’m excited I just downloaded like 4 new books for free! Great if you read romance, YA or sci-fi.
