With all the great books I’ve had to read I haven’t had much time to re-read a lot of my favorite books so I haven’t blogged about them.  But there are definitely some that deserve a highlight.  In honor of the upcoming new Star Trek movie I will be highlighting some of my favorite Star Trek books.  Today’s highlight is: Possession (Star Trek: The Next Generation, No. 40) by J.M. Dillard.

possession

Description: Eighty years ago, bodiless entities brought a plague of violence and bloodshed to the planet Vulcan. The nightmare ended only when the entities were trapped inside special containers.

Now, on the eve of a galaxy-scale scientific exposition, the containers have been opened, freeing the malevolent entities to possess the minds and bodies of all they encounter, including the crew of the Starship Enterprise™. Friends turn into foes, and no one can be trusted as Captain Picard faces a deadly and insidious threat. Unless the entities can be stopped once more, they will spread their madness throughout the entire federation.

Troi is one of my favorite Star Trek characters so I tend to like the ones in which she plays an important part.  This story is great because you get to see a side of the Vulcans that they try to repress or hide because it shows that they can also fall prey to the darker emotions.  You also get a little romance and to see the softer side of Worf as he develops a relationship with one of the visiting scientists the Enterprise is shuttling to a science fair.  This also means getting to see more of his son, Alexander, which adds a nice dose of humor to the story.  And to round off the action is Data as usual the calm in the eye of the storm as most of the crew goes crazy from the infection by the entities.  So lets recap-romance, humor, possession by evil entities and my favorite Star Trek crew.  How can it go wrong?

Troi is one of my favourite characters, too, so I generally enjoy her books. :)

Yup, one of my favorite tv episodes was the one where they all starting de-evolving and she turns into that frog-like thing and Worf wants to be her mate :)
