New Books

May 10th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

So let me say first off that yes I made a Borders run but it was my birthday last week and I got some good coupons from Borders so I feel justified :)

What I picked up at Borders:

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

Description: When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she’s worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

Dreamland by Sarah Dessen

Description from Powell ‘s Books:When Caitlin first meets Rogerson Biscoe, he seems to be everything she wants him to be. He\’s handsome, sensitive, and more than a bit mysterious. And before long, Rogerson has cast a spell over Caitlin. A spell that keeps her in a dreamland from which she can\’t seem to break free-even when the dreams turn into nightmares. Beautifully crafted, with a vivid plot and sharply drawn characters, this is a powerful and intensely compelling story of a young girl struggling to break free of an abusive relationship.

Crouching Vampire Hidden Fang by Katie MacAlister

Description: For a woman married to the vampire of her nightmares, the honeymoon’s over— and reality bites…

Pia Thomason is torn between two Dark Ones: her husband Kristoff—who doesn’t trust her—and his best friend, Alec, who is MIA. So Pia goes back to her humdrum Seattle life, but fate has other plans. And she realizes that if she and Kristoff are going to be shackled together for better or worse, she may as well start to enjoy it…

And in the mail I received:

Testimony Anita Shreve

Description from At a New England boarding school, a sex scandal is about to break. Even more shocking than the sexual acts themselves is the fact that they were caught on videotape. A Pandora’s box of revelations, the tape triggers a chorus of voices–those of the men, women, teenagers, and parents involved in the scandal–that details the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed in one foolish moment.

The Osiris Alliancy  by Jack Ford

Description: In “The Osiris Alliance” federal prosecutor Adam Stark and journalist Megan Delaney learn of a stolen journal containing surprising links to the infamous Lindbergh baby trial that may reveal answers to the nuclear arms puzzle. As the journal’s powerful owner tries desperately to retrieve it, witnesses involved with the case begin turning up dead. Racing to find the journal and solve the nuclear mystery, Stark and Delaney are confronted with a series of murders and a betrayal that could make them the next victims.

Cemetary Dance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Description: Pendergast-the world’s most enigmatic FBI Special Agent-returns to New York City to investigate a murderous cult. His serpentine journey takes him to an enclave of Manhattan he never imagined could exist: a secretive, reclusive cult of Obeah and vodou which no outsider has ever survived.

Mating Rituals of the North American Wasp by Lauren Lipton

Description: Peggy Adams is comfortable in her New York life, until she makes an unusual agreement with Luke

Sedgwick, the last scion of an old New England family. The deal: Stay married for a year, and the two will inherit the Sedgwick mansion in New Nineveh, a quaint, preppy Connecticut town.

But entering Luke’s world isn’t easy. Peggy must quickly learn how to pass herself off as a proper Connecticut wife and a perfect WASP.

(Hint: At parties, nobody actually eats the food.) To make matters worse, she finds herself falling in love with the man she’s married to—despite that he seems to have no feelings for her.

Once Bitten by Kalayna Price

Description from Vampires and Shapeshifters. A Fictionwise bestseller: No. 1 on the Fictionwise Dark Fantasy list in Feb. 2009 Kita Nekai, on the run and the smallest of her shifter clan-a calico cat among lions and tigers-is being hunted. She was expected to accept her role as her father’s successor whether or not her cat was up to the task of leading the clan. She disagreed. Now she’s less than a step ahead of the hunters, bone-tired, cold, and living hand-to-mouth in the city of Haven. And that’s the high point of her day. She’s also drugged, “accidently” turned into a vampire, and sentenced to death for recklessly creating a rogue shifter who tortures its human prey. She’s got seventy-two hours to find the rogue, evade a city full of hunters, prove she’s not responsible for the rogue, and keep the vampire council from killing her. All while sorting out an apprentice mage, a married ex-boyfriend shifter-hunter, and the vampire who made her.
