Musing Mondays June 15

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about award winning books…

Do you feel compelled to read prize-winning (Giller/Booker/Pulitzer etc) books? Why, or why not? Is there, perhaps, one particular award that you favour? (question courtesy of MizB)

Ok, I feel really ignorant or low brow saying this but I rarely pay any attention if a book has won any sort of award.  Honestly, I think it’s because I have some odd tastes and often don’t care for the books that are “classics” or are receiving rave reviews.  Some examples, I wasn’t a fan of The Kite Runner, The Sound and the Fury, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, etc.  I don’t know if and what awards any of those books may have won but I just don’t see what the big deal is.  I guess I just enjoy reading a good story and don’t look for good “literature”.  When I pick a book out I pay more attention to the opinions I find on blogs, from friends, the book cover blurb and the cover.

What about you?

I too think book bloggers give us better ideas about a book than anyone else. Including prizes…

I do so too. Awards are great but they have more criteria than just being “good”.. :)

I don’t care so much about awards either. With those, I feel I often either love the book or hate it. So instead, I base my choice on reviews or people’s advice, too! :) Very similar to you in fact!

As I mentioned in comments on Beth Fish Reads on this subject I don’t feel compelled to purchase anything I don’t want to at all. I don’t tend to read these awards listings so I’m not running out to get the prize winners. Having said that, if I purchase a book that I find intriguing or interesting and it happens to be a prize winner so be it. Kudos to the authors it is fabulous for them to be recognized but that doesn’t mean much to me and my choice.

I also don’t really pay attention to the winners really. If I see a book with the label I might take an extra glance but I won’t be compelled to read it. It’s almost like reading a book because Oprah told you to. I don’t like being bossed around. I will take reading advice from other bloggers though.

I rely on recommendations from friends and bloggers as well as browsing and finding something that sounds interesting rather than if the book won an award.
