Book cover double takes

June 26th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I was just going through my Amazon wish list to decide which book I was going to let myself buy tonight and then was going through my Google Reader and had to do a double take.  I already had:

Flirting With Boys in my wish list.

And then I saw on Harmony Book Reviews site The Secret Life of Prince Charming:

If you read some of my previous posts you know the cover plays big into grabbing my attention and I almost missed this book because I had just glanced at the cover and thought it was Flirting With Boys.  Before finding Pop Culture Junkie‘s blog I did not realize how common it was for different books to have similar if not almost the same cover.  It did not really bother me until I realized here I may be missing out on some books since I do tend to skim covers.

I really don’t understand how choosing a book’s cover works.  You would think each book would want it’s own unique cover that fits it’s story.  Is it cheaper to use a stock picture or one that has already been used?  Is it because the publisher doesn’t think those books will sell as much so they don’t want to put as much into their covers?  Anyone have any insight into how selecting book covers work?

I know little, but I do know that using stock pictures usually costs a lot less than hiring a professional photographer to do one special picture (or any other artist).Often they will modify the colors or certain aspects of it to make sure they have a unique cover, but in other cases, like here, they just put the picture there and that’s it.

It’s kind of disappointing because, like you, I could have passed over it easily, thinking that one was paperback and the other hardcover. I know it already happened to me, but I can’t remember with which book!

Wow, that’s crazy. I had no idea that could happen…the same exact image! I’m curious to find out what others chime in with on this topic…

I know! That is why I love Pop Culture Junkie’s blog I sometimes find look alikes on there that I’ve over looked because of the covers.

that’s weird. i don’t really like it when they do that, becuase i sometimes recognize books by their cover, and then i get a rude awakening because hello! that wasnt the book i wanted, it just looks like it :(
