Is Kindle the next Betamax?

August 13th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

Lately the ebook reader market seems to be hopping lately.  First there was the news that Sony is lowering the price of one of it’s readers to $199 and a touchscreen reader for $299.  See more details here.  Lately I am all about the touch screen so this was exciting news to me.  Not to mention with the Kindle costing $299 this is really going to give them a run for their money.

I also read in the latest Shelf Awareness issue that Sony will be selling their ebooks in the open ePub format so books sold for the Sony reader will also be readable on other readers other than the Kindle.  Talk about awesome.  I own the Kindle 1 and it does suck I can’t move my books to any other reader.

The most interesting article for me was this MarketWatch article, “Kindle in danger of becoming e-books’ Betamax“.  I love my Kindle but I can totally see what this article is saying.  It seems to make sense to go to one agree upon, open format for ebook readers.

The major thing I love about the love about my Kindle is the wireless download option.  I use that all the time.  I download books when I’m at the train station or if I’m browsing the web and see a Kindle book that interests me when I don’t have my Kindle handy, I can just purchase it and know it will download the next time I turn on my Kindle.  How awesome is that?

I will admit to temptation though.  As soon as Sony comes up with some sort of wireless delivery option I’m going to have to give it a try.  Come on Amazon!  Get with the program so I can stick with y’all.

What about you?  What do you think of all these announcements lately?

I think all of the announcements are exciting! I want options for my ebooks. I don’t have a reader at the moment, so I need my ebooks in a format that can be downloaded and read on my computer. Amazon wanted exclusitivity (and total control) and it may now come back and bite them in the tush.
And I had a Betamax machine for the longest time! We called it the Beta Beast, as it weighed a ton.

The market is still developing. I’m not one to jump on a particular bandwagon when it comes to technology…especially in the early stages. I guess I’m still waiting to see the market shake out.

I am with Serena on this one. It took me awhile to jump on the iPod bandwagon (about the 3rd generation). So, I have no problem waiting to see how this one works out. I do like Sony’s line of thinking. I would probably get the $199 reader because of the price and it has nothing to do with Amazon.

But there should be a few more readers coming out in the next year, so I will patiently wait. And hide my jealously of people with ereaders.

I’ve wanted a Kindle for a while now, but I haven’t stopped and bought one….mostly because of the $299 price tag.

Interesting article. It makes me want to wait now before I buy one!

    L. Diane-lol, we had a betamax too! I actually really liked it.
Serena, Monique, Jenn-yeah, I’ve been seeing a lot of news of new readers too. Can’t wait to see how everything pans out.
