Demon Princess: Reign or Shine by Michelle Rowan

August 19th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Description: As if trying to fit in at a new school isn’t stressful enough, sixteen-year-old Nikki Donovan just found out that her long-lost father is, in fact, the demon king of the Shadowlands—the world that separates and protects us from the Underworld. When she is brought there by the mysterious—and surprisingly cute—messenger Michael, she learns that her father is dying, and he wants her to assume the throne. To complicate matters, a war is brewing between the Shadowlands and the Underworld, her half-demon qualities are manifesting, and her growing feelings for Michael are completely forbidden. Ruling a kingdom, navigating a secret crush, and still making it home by curfew—what’s a teenage demon princess to do?

I have been wanting to read this book for a long time and was lucky enough that Michelle at Windowpane Memoirs lent it to me.  It was a cute and quick read.  The story was pretty predictable but the characters were enjoyable.  I liked Nikki’s character because she was a nice balance of insecurity and confidence that made her seem like your typical teenager.  This book did a lot of set up for great things to come in book 2.  I cannot wait for the next book to find out what happens between her and Michael.  I also have a feeling we probably have not seen the last of her aunt and her demon boyfriend.  You also get teasing glances of the fairies who may or may not turn out to be enemies of Nikki and I am also curious to see what happens with Nikki’s friend, Melinda.  She jokingly mentions she is a demon slayer but I have a feeling it is going to turn out to be true.   I cannot wait until 2010 when the next book, Demon Princess: Reign Check comes out!

Ok, there is a serious bit of folklore that I’m missing because this sounds exactly like the Adam Sandler movie “Little Nicky” and both protagonists are a version of Nicky/Nikki. What gives? :)Being a child of the eighties, I was a big fan of anything Sandler and loved the movie so the plot has my attention. Obviously, it’s a little cuter than the film premise, though!

LOL. I’ve never been a big Sandler fan so haven’t seen little Nicky. Of course, this one has to throw in the cute guy who she’s not allowed to have a relationship with. I’m all about the forbidden cute guys :)
