The Vampire Diaries TV Premiere

Did you watch the premiere of The Vampire Diaries?  What did you think?  Did you read the books before watching?  This was my favorite series growing up in the 90s although I recently re-read them and didn’t enjoy them as much.  Still I was really excited when I heard they were making a tv show out of it.  So far it looks like the tv series is going to be very different from the books.  First off Elena is a brunette which surprised me and she has a brother.  From what I recall in the books she only had a younger sister.  Also the character I thought was Meredith is actually Bonnie and she isn’t anything like in the books.

Once I get past the differences from the books the premiere was just so-so for me.  I’m going to give it time as first seasons rarely really grab me.  I did like the twist that instead of renting a room, Stefan is instead staying with his “uncle” who knows what Stefan really is and sounds like is actually a descendant of Stefan’s.  Damon does look like he is going to be his arrogant, trouble making self.  Let me just say Damon is hot!  Stefan doesn’t do it as much for me though.  What about you?  If you read the books which guy would you choose if you had a choice between Matt, Damon and Stefan?  Let me know here.

I haven’t read the books, but I watched the show tonight. I thought it was okay–I liked it enough to want to see if the show gets better at least. I’m glad to see Somerhalder again (I’m a big fan of LOST). He’s definitely looking good. :-)

I haven’t read the books yet but I did enjoy television show. I’ll be watching again next week and reading the series soon.

I read the first 2 books and wasn’t crazy about them. I read them because I wanted to get a feel for what the show was going to be about. Noticing all of the differences, I guess I didn’t need to. I am going to keep watching, but I probably won’t read the other 2 books in the series.

I can see why they replaced the 4yo sister with a teenage little brother. I adds another layer to the subplots. And wasn’t Caroline a former friend in the books?

Somerhalder was definitely looking good :)
KyleeJ- yes I can see why the teenage brother would make beter tv. In the books Caroline was Elena’s ex-good friend and was totally jealous of Elena. I haven’t seen Bonnie yet unless I missed her.

I haven’t read the book and I DVR’d the show last night. I am planning on watching it over the weekend. I will definitely give it a handful of episodes before I decide whether it’s a keeper or something to take off the schedule.

Haven’t read the books yet, but I enjoyed last night’s show. Watching anything on the CW network makes me feel like a teenager again–I like all that emotional angst. Elena seems likeable enough and the vamps both have the smoldering good looks which will keep me tuned in for the next episode.

Should I read the books? I began reading the Sookie Stackhouse books during the summer because I wanted to find out what might happen next in TrueBlood, but the show’s so different that it quickly proved pointless. Plus, Sookie becomes exceptionally unlikeable in the books while I can still tolerate her on the show.

Lori-same here about deciding if it’s a keeper
Jenn-I’ve seen a lot of mixed reactions to the books. They were written in the 90s so the style is much more simplistic than in today’s YA books. The 5th book which was written in 2009 is very different and I enjoyed it. If you mean just to know what’s going to happen in the TV show, it doesn’t look like they are sticking to the books much. Both brothers did have a thing for Katherine back in the 1800s and Elena does supposedly look exactly like her. Not sure if they will handle it the same way in the tv show though.

I DVR’d the show last night and hope to watch it this evening. Thanks for the rundown!

Haven’t seen the show or read the books but I’d take Ian any day :)

I haven’t read the books(but I might someday) and I haven’t yet seen the first episode but I’m planning to watch it as soon as I can!

I read the books and I’m watching the series, they have changed a lot of things, lets see how it works out but i really liked her sister in the books. Damon IS hot but i still prefer Stefan!

I did enjoy her little sister but the brother can add so much more drama. I’m a total Damon girl :)

I started reading the books but I’m only about 100 pages in. So far, I like the TV series better. I’m thinking that VD will be like True Blood; some similarities but a lot of differences. I’m all about Stefan!!! Am I the only one who’s not digging Damon?

  14. dsuzuki

Damon is good looking in the tv show but it’s in the books that you see the hints of his softer side.

  15. Stephanie

I watched the show last night. It was just ok. Damon is hot! I will most likely just watch them on DVR not so much live.

Stephanie-I have to watch on DVR since my daughter is still up at the time.

I have not yet read the books and after watching the first episode I’m not sure that I will (although book are almost always better!). I found the premiere to be a bit boring and cheesy. There were too many copycat elements of another popular vampire series. The only good thing I can say about the series is that the cemetery scene was shot less than a mile from my house!! I immediately recognized it, along with a few other landmarks. They are still in town taping future episodes. Maybe I’ll run into them in my little community! :)

How exciting they are shooting near you!

I have read the first two books and while I was entertained and read is speed pace, the books where so-so. Geared for youth for sure. My 12yod loved the books.

The TV show, having a brother – what? Did not like that. Elena came off much nicer than she did in the beginning of the books. Brunette instead of blonde…ugh. Those three things cinched it for my 12yod…she did not like the changes and walked away from the show. I am going to watch a few more episodes before I decide completley but am leaning towards not watching the show myself.

I am thinking the show will be far better received by youth than by this 40 year old Mom!

I think the show gets better if you stop comparing it to the books. I’m still waiting before I make a decision on whether to keep watching or stop.
