BBAW Fun: Interview with Melanie of Melanie’s Musings

September 14th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

As a part of the Book Blogger Appreciation Week I had the wonderful chance to interview Melanie of Melanie’s Musings. This was a wonderful chance to learn more about her and it helped me discover a new blog to follow.  Be sure to go and check it out!  Read on to see what Melanie had to say.

How did you discover the book blogging community?
I had come across Random Buzzers (http://www.randombuzzers.com/) one day while browsing the internet.  I became a member, and I found out about book blogs while participating in some discussions on the forums.  Prior to that, I didn’t know book blogs even existed.

What prompted you to start blogging?
I don’t have any friends that are quite as enthused about books as I am.  I spent some time observing blogs, and I was surprised to find that a lot of bloggers seemed to know and like each other.  I decided that I wanted to be a part of the community.

Do you have any advice for new/aspiring bloggers?
I’m a new blogger myself, working on my fifth month, so I still have a lot to learn.  However, one thing I have learned is to relax.  If you’re not enjoying it, try doing something different.  At first, I thought it was mandatory that I updated every single day.  I almost burned myself out. I’ve learned that if I can do that, great!  If I can’t, the world isn’t going to fall apart, and tomorrow will be here soon enough.

What is your favorite and least favorite aspects of blogging and the blogging community?
My favorite aspect is how helpful everyone is.  Before I got started, I emailed a few bloggers asking questions.  They were so nice about it.  If I have a question, someone will answer it, nicely.  Because we are a community, skirmishes occasionally come up that I think could be done without.  However, sometimes these can help make the community stronger.

Who are your favorite authors?
I really like Elizabeth Gaskell.  I’ve only read one of her books, North and South, but it completely amazed me.  It’s one of the most beautiful, complicated love stories I’ve ever read.  I’m hoping to read more of her work soon.  As far as living authors go, Lisa Mantchev is awesome.  Eyes Like Stars is so fresh!  Plus, she’s incredibly funny on Twitter, although she does make me hungry with all her talk about cupcakes.

What are some of your favorite blogs?
There are so may great blogs out there!  The Story Siren (http://thestorysiren.com), Books by Their Cover (http://booksbytheircover.blogspot.com), Harmony Book Reviews (http://harmonybookreviews.wordpress.com) and Pirate Penguin Reads (http://piratepenguinreads.blogspot.com) are just a few fun and informative blogs.

How would you describe your blog?
I’d say it’s a place where you can hear about books, movies, and the randomosity of teenage life, on occasion.

If you could only own one book which one would it be?
How about The Complete Works of Jane Austen?  I saw that at a bookstore a few days ago.  I’m sure it could keep me occupied for a while.

Which book title do you think most describes you and your life?
That’s a hard one.  You are Here would probably fit because I try, although I fail all the time, to stay rooted in the present as much as possible.  Pride and Prejudice would probably fit as well because I exhibit both traits occasionally.  I’m working on that, though.

Thanks again Melanie for taking the time to answer my questions!  I hope everyone enjoyed seeing a little insight into Melanie.  At least one of your favorite blogs is new to me and can’t wait to check it out.

I’m reading my first Gaskell book – CRANFORD – right now for a read-a-long I’m hosting on my blog. It’s a great book and I’m sure I’ll read more of hers in the future.

Great interview! You are both new-to-me blogs and it is great to “meet” you. :)

    Love the interview!
I already actually follow this blog which I found courtesy of Melanie “following” me on Twitter! (**waving, Hi!**)

I agree about the friendliness of this online community. Everyone is so helpful and eager to share….it’s a blast!

Nice to get to know Melanie! And I agree – if you’re not having fun, if it’s a drag – you’re doing it wrong.

Good questions. I also like meeting people in the blogging world to talk about books, because some of my real friends aren’t into books as much as me. Both of you also have lovely blogs.

I especially like the advice about not having to post every day. Sometimes I just let the blog go and guess what? It’s still there when I come back! Thanks for the interview.
