What book did a blog introduce you to? For me-Vampire Academy!

September 16th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

Today’s topic is about a book, preferably one you loved, that you found on a book blog.

So I am sad to say I cannot remember whose blog I first read about Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead but I am so glad that I did come across their post.  This has become my favorite series and it totally has me hooked.  I will admit before seeing this talked about on blogs I did see the books at Borders.  I picked up book 1 several times but the cover just wasn’t grabbing me and the book blurb only had me vaguely interested.  It was reading all the positive reviews about the series that finally prompted me to buy the first book.

I get this question all the time. Is this just like Twilight?  No, just because it’s a book involving vampires it’s really different and I don’t think should really be compared to each other.  That said while I enjoyed Twilight, Vampire Academy by far is my favorite young adult vampire series.

When the latest book, Blood Promise, came out I bought it on release day on my Kindle so I could start even though the bookstores were not open.  I finished it the same day and it did not disappoint.  How said it would have been if I had never come across this series in the book blogging world.

Book 1 is Vampire Academy

In this book there are two types of vampires-moroi, who do not kill to drink blood, and the strigoi, which are the evil vampires who enjoy killing.  In addition to this there are the dhampirs who are the offspring of a Moroi and a human.  These dhampirs are stronger and have more stamina than your typical human or Moroi.  Therefore they make the perfect body guards to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi.

Lissa, a Moroi royal princess, and her dhampir guardian in training, Rose, are the best of friends.  Both are attending St. Vladimir’s Academy where Rose is finishing up her training to be a full fledged guardian.  Rose senses Lissa is in danger but can they reach her on the Academy grounds?  To add to Rose’s problems she starts developing forbidden feelings for one of her teachers, Dmitri.  What’s a girl to do?

I will admit book 1 was a little slow for me but I was hooked by the end.  See my review here.

Book 2 Frostbite

Rose is continuing to fight her forbidden attraction to her teacher and personal trainer, Dmitri, but will either of them be able to resist one another much longer?  Rose also has to face Lissa’s burgeoning relationship with an outcast Royal, Christian.  And if things could not get any worse an entire Moroi family is murdered and everyone is on high alert.  Will they be able to survive the holidays?

Ok, yes my description is cheesy but it is getting really, really good!  See my review for Frostbite.

Book 3 Shadow Kiss

Rose has survived a Strigoi attack and even made two kills of her own but now has the death of a fellow dhampir student on her conscience and is suffering bouts of depression and anger that she doesn’t know how to deal with.  She has also started seeing ghosts that no one else can see and finally has to face an unheard of attack by a large group of Strigoi on the academy grounds.  Will Rose and Lissa survive unharmed?  Will Rose and Dmitri finally get together or will they lose each other forever?

This was my first 5 out of 5 star reviews for 2009.  Absolutely loved it!  See my review of Shadow Kiss.

Book 4 Blood Promise

There is just no way for me to write even a short description for this book without giving away major parts of books 1-3 but trust me it’s well worth the read and will leave you hanging for more.  See my review of Blood Promise.

Book 5 Spirit Bound

Sadly we have to wait until May 2010 for book 5!  I am anxiously awaiting this book and cannot wait to find out what happens next.

So seriously if you have not read this series before I highly suggest you check it out.

I’ve been hearing awesome things about this series but I haven’t read it yet. I got a copy of VA from the library last weekend so hopefully I’ll get down to reading it soon.

Vampire Academy… hmm… sounds intriguing. I’ll have to check it out and see if I like it. I’m not too fond of vampire stories at the moment (not after reading Breaking Dawn, which has about turned me off vampires for a while), but it can’t hurt to try, after all. Thanks for the suggestion.

Alessandra if it helps I thought these were much better than Twilight.
