Love Your Library

September 17th, 2009 by Debbie's World of Books

So what does love your library have to do with the Book Blogger Appreciation Week you may ask?  I see a lot of postings about the ARCs received from authors, publishers, publicists, etc that we all review for our blogs and the books we buy but at least for me the library is a huge resource of the books I read and allow me to review more books than I would be able to without it.  So I just wanted to give a shout out to my local library branch, the Newark Public Library in Alameda County, California.

I visit the library at least once a week to borrow or return books.  I also just started browsing their DVD collection and was finally able to watch Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen which I had meant to do for a long time.  They also have a bunch of events such as:

  • Toddler Time
  • Preschool Story Time
  • Craft classes
  • Computer help classes
  • A reading club meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month and anyone is welcome to participate

During these economic times it’s rough on many people who cannot afford to buy their own books so thank goodness for the library.  Just imagine in the past year 274,316 items were checked out – books, dvds, magazines, books on cd, etc. and their average monthly circulation, stuff checked out,  is right around 25,000.

Since my daughter was born and since I started receiving review copies of books I will admit my number of library books I borrow has decreased but I am consciously making the effort to change that.  You can see a list of the library books I’ve borrowed this year on my Support Your Library 2009 Challenge page.  I’ve reviewed 46 books this year that I borrowed from the library.  I also currently have 15 library books checked out.

What are some of the awesomeness of my library?

  • There are 10 libraries in our county system that I can request books from if the Newark branch doesn’t have what I’m looking for.
  • If I still cannot find what I’m looking for they also participate in the Link+ program which involves over 40 other libraries that I can request books from.
  • I just found out that my library also has NetLibrary books!  I started looking into audio books so I would have something to listen to while working out and also for road trips
  • You can request books and renew books online from home.
  • They send you email reminders a few days before a library book is due
  • They have awesome New Book shelves for both general fiction and their teen area
  • You can sign up for emails of new arrivals, a chapter a day from books in different genres and book group resources

What about your library? Do you use your local library often?  Do you want to use your library more often?  What’s the best thing about your library or why do you not use your library?

Your library looks really nice! Ours is… old.
I tend to use the library mostly for research.

We are lucky enough to live just a short walk from our local branch (a longer walk back though; big hill). I like this idea. If you don’t mind, I’d like to borrow this idea and do one of my own!

I use my library fairly often. It’s very small, but thankfully they’re part of a network of libraries aw well. It takes a while to get the books, but it’s definitely worth it. The people who work there aren’t the nicest, but I do like the books, so it works!

    L. Diane-ours is pretty old but they get some great books in. The Fremont library which is close by got a rehaul recently and is awesome too.

KyleeJ-please do! Always glad to see support for our libraries. That’s nice you are a short walk away from your library.

Melanie-that’s bummed the workers aren’t the nicest. I think it was my local librarians back in Hawaii that helped nurture my love of books. I knew most of them by name.

I think it’s fantastic thay you wrote this blog talking about how great your library is and how much you like to make use of it borrowing books and things. I think many people don’t realize how valuable libraries are and aren’t aware of all the programs they host for the community. When I was growing up, I used my local library all the time.
I’m not as good about it now but I’m going to try to be.
Thanks for the reminder and a great post!

Amy-I hope everyone uses their library more and also supports it through the Friends of the Library book sales and other donations. It’s sad to see libraries closing down due to budget cuts. My mom was just telling me the libraries in Hawaii are in danger of cutting services and said that if every person in the state gave just $1 they wouldn’t have to cut anything.
