Book Signing With Scott Westerfeld and Sarah Rees Brennan

How cool is this entry?

So when I heard Scott Westerfeld was going to be at the Menlo Park Library thanks to Keplers Book Store I was totally stoked!  I loved his Uglies series and couldn’t wait to see him.  Sarah Rees Brennan was also going to be there so I ran out and bought The Demon’s Lexicon too.  I only had a chance to read the first few pages while waiting for them to appear but it was already sounding good.

There he is!

Let me say here that if you have a chance to go see these two speak run, don’t walk!  They were both funny to hear and Scott just blew me away.  I have to admit the sound of Leviathan did not immediately grab me so I held off on buying the book.  After the presentation he gave about the history of illustrations in books and then the process of creating the illustrations for Leviathan I wanted to run out to go get Leviathan before the book signing.  But I couldn’t drag myself away since he was so much fun to listen to.  His commentary on how teenagers are viewed in today’s society and how reading has really become a social activity thanks to things like blogs and Twitter were great.  He also has a wonderful sense of humor.

One of the replies I found interesting was when Scott was asked if he will be writing another adult book any time soon.  He said probably not anytime soon.  He is going to stick with YA books for awhile.

The topic of dystopia’s came up and it was mentioned that Uglies isn’t really a true dystopia because there actually were a lot of good things like not wanting war, being good to the environment, etc.  Scott mentioned how high school is almost a dystopia for teen agers.  They move at the whims of the school bell, are told what to wear, where to go, etc.  Never really thought about it that way.

And if you didn’t know the Leviathan series is going to be a trilogy but with a fourth book probably with more illustrations in it.

Sarah also mentioned she is working on a contemporary romance with Cassandra Clare (another of my favorite authors!).

After about 1 1/2 hours they starting signing the books.  I again wished I have Leviathan but made do just getting my copy of Uglies signed as well as a Leviathan post card signed.  It is very cool!

Again a big thanks to Kepler’s for organizing this and to Scott and Sarah for being such great speakers!

I’m not normally one who gets into book trailers but this trailer was awesome!  Leviathan book trailor:

Sounds like you had a fabulous time! They are actually going to be here in DC next week so I might try and go. It’s likely going to be difficult because it starts during work and getting into DC would require me to take some time off. UGH.

I actually got a copy of Leviathan earlier this week it’s so pretty and nice!

Michelle-if you can you should so go. He showed a bunch of great slides and some before & after shots of some illustrations. He was hilarious to see and a great speaker. I’m running out to Borders as soon as work is done today!

    L. Diane Wolfe-my daughter had a blast in the tent :)

    A Bookshelf Monstrosity-me too!

Nice to see you again Debbie. And sorry you didn’t get a book beforehand. If that happens again, let me know and I can bring it to you, you can get it signed, then pay on your way out. Oh, and I loved your photos! And agree, the event was great – both authors made me want to rush right out and start their books – immediately.

Yay! I am glad you had a fun time. I am very interested in reading Westerfeld’s latest book – Leviathan.
If he were to come close to my area, I would make the effort to attend and bring my 12 year old daughter along. She loved the Pretties series.

A week ago I was able to meet Diana Gabaldon. It was amazing. I blogged about it. I am very glad I had the chance to attend her event.

Again, Yay…I am glad you had a good time.
