State of the TBR Pile January 18

January 19th, 2010 by Debbie's World of Books

stateofthetbrpile

I am a little ashamed to admit that I’ve let the number of unread books sitting on my shelves surpass the 200 mark.  This is just books I’ve bought, traded for, etc. and does not include any books I received for review.

So for 2010 I am making it a priority to read from the piles of books I already own and try to limit the number of new books I buy each month.  I’m hoping if I do a weekly State of the TBR Pile post it will help keep me on track.  I’ll be posting which books are in my TBR pile that I am aiming to read for this month, any new books I’ve bought and are added to the TBR pile and the status of how many of my TBR books I’ve completed.

I hope I am not alone in my towering TBR piles so please feel free to jump in and post about what your goals are for the month regarding your TBR pile.

My January TBR Pile Goals and Status

To Read

This month I plan on reading at least 4 books from my TBR pile not including review books or library books.  Here are the ones I currently plan on reading:

midwifeoftheblueridge
Midwife of the Blue Ridge by Christine Blevins

Description from Goodreads.com: They call her Dark Maggie for her thick black hair, but the name also has a more sinister connotation. As the lone survivor of an attack on her village, she was thought to be cursed and unfit for marriage. Maggie is also gifted with quick wits and skilled in medicine, trained as a midwife. Venturing to the colonies as an indentured servant, she hopes to escape the superstitions of the old country and find a home of her own. But what she discovers is a New World fraught with new dangers.

patientzero

Patient Zero by Jonathan Mayberry

Description from Goodreads.com: When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there’s either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills… and there’s nothing wrong with Joe Ledger’s skills.  And that’s both a good, and a bad thing.  It’s good because he’s a Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can’t handle. This rapid response group is called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It’s bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance…

ohmygods

Oh My Gods by Tera Lyn Childs

Description from Goodreads.com:

A modern girl’s comedic odyssey in a school filled with the descendants of Greek gods.

When Phoebe’s mom returns from Greece with a new husband and moves them to an island in the Aegean, Phoebe’s plans for her senior year and track season are ancient history. Now she must attend the uber exclusive academy, where admission depends on pedigree, namely, ancestry from Zeus, Hera, and other Greek gods. That’s right, they’re real, not myth, and their teen descendants are like the classical heroes -supersmart and superbeautiful with a few superpowers. And now they’re on her track team! Armed only with her Nikes and the will to win, Phoebe races to find her place among the gods.

feed

Feed by M.T. Anderson

Description from Fantastic Fiction.com: Spending time partying on the moon and riding around in his “upcar,” Titus is an average teen of the future, complete with a computer chip implant — the “Feed” — that lets corporate marketers and government agencies broadcast directly into his brain. Then Titus meets Violet, and an anti-Feed hacker shuts down their Feeds for a short time; but when Violet’s Feed is seriously damaged, she begins spouting some radical ideas.

The Bought/Borrowed

Woohoo!  Despite the temptations of the 33% off coupons from Borders I’ve restrained myself from buying any new books.  I did borrow one book from the library but already finished it.  I borrowed The Dead and Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer.  Awesome book!

Progress

I will be starting Oh My Gods as my next book to read.

I have a similiar problem, which is why I came up with the Bottoms Up challenge. I am actually finding some great titles at the bottom on my stack.

Bwah-ha-ha! If only mine were just over 200 again! I might actually have hope to ever finish the thing! But alas! I sat down last year and figured out that if all I did was read, eat, read, sleep, read, do the bathroom stuff, and read some more, and just did that for the next 5 years, I still wouldn’t get through all my TBR books!

    Oh well! lol…

I just got Patient Zero from my SantaThing, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of that one.

Best of luck to you with your TBR pile, I am actually in the process of reading a ton of review books, then i have a ton of tbrs that I own I need to get to … not sure but I have a feeling I need to make another blog just for reviews on books lol.

You are most definitely not alone. My TBR pile has grown substantially in the last 8 months. I think I’m sitting close to 100 in my personal TBR pile.

  5. Fiction Vixen

Wow, good luck to you on shaving down that pile! I admit to having similar issues with my pile. Every time I resolve not to buy or trade, I find myself falling off the wagon. I hope you do better than I do! :)

  6. L. Diane Wolfe

Sometimes I don’t know how you guys keep up with all those books!

  7. Michelle

A noble goal. However, I have far more unread books and read much less than you. I think I’m a lost cause.

Wow! 200, and I thought I had a problem, I guess I have not been doing this long enough, not to mention my budget is not allowing me to go to the bookstore as often as my addiction would like. Good luck with whittling that pile done, but I have a feeling that you might just find that once you are down to what 15o you will feel the need to get more. Admitting is half the problem right?

  9. Serena (Savvy Verse & Wit)

good luck with your goals for 2010 and reading from your stacks. I often get distracted by new shiny books.

Elie-the bottom of my TBR pile changes as piles topple over and need to be restacked :)

LOL. It’s never a lost caused. Come on people! We can do it.

What a terrific idea!! I have the same problem. I’ve really been trying to cut back but I don’t seem to be catching up. And then when I visit other blogs I find so many great new books (like the ones you just posted!) to add to my list. I already had many used books that I had picked up at amazing prices and then I discovered blogging and reviewing. I still haven’t gotten back to all of those but they are waiting patiently. It’s a good thing there isn’t an expiration date on them!

Writing out your goals is such a good way to stay motivated. You’ve inspired me to set up my own goals. I’m not sure what they’ll be yet but you’ve still inspired me. :) Good luck! To all of us!

Good luck on your pile! I know what you mean. The list never seems to really get shorter huh? I am already loving writing down these goals. I wanted to have something to update so it forced me to read one of my TBR pile books and am so glad I did. I loved it and it’s been on my shelves for ages. Can’t believe I was missing out.

  13. Kay

Haha! I understand what you mean! I did a count of my TBR pile just before New Year, which I estimated at about 150 books, and was horrified to discover it was over 200 books! So I have a similar objective for the year : read from the TBR pile and buy less.
I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on Oh.My.Gods! and Patient Zero, as both are on my TBR list.

  14. Michelle

Good for you! I’m so painfully behind on my TBR and I still can’t restrain from the occasional coupon purchase. At this point I’m just trying to get through my review copies! LOL

Keep up the good work :)
