I give this book 4 out of 5 stars

Description from Amazon.com: Fighting for control of a kingdom that is split into seven domains, Elven warlords use their human slaves to breed an endless supply of soldiers for their armies. Dominic Raikes, the half-blood son of the Elven Lord himself is one such warrior. Betrothed to Lady Cassandra, who has been raised in a convent to keep her pure, he little suspects that she’s been secretly trained as an assassin to murder his father…and him. Dominic and Cassandra soon discover that each one is not what they seem, but the price of trust may be their very lives, and the destruction of the magical realm each is desperately trying to save…

I was looking forward to this book because I love historical romances and fantasy stories that include elves but I was still surprised how enjoyable a read this was.  The reader knows both Dominic and Cassandra are going to fall in love but it was still fun watching them come to know each other and fall in love.  I love Dominic’s character and it was heartbreaking watching the difficult position he finds himself in having to hold himself apart from those around him in fear that any sign of affection will bring his father’s wrath down on them.  Cassandra was also a likeable character but I wish we could have seen more of her training and the history of her death dance powers.

I will even go so far to say this would have been a wonderful longer, fantasy novel.  There was so much going on with this world in which Elven lords have taken control of England, their half-breed offspring have all sorts of powers, there is the mysterious world of Elfhame which the elves came from and more.  I really would have enjoyed seeing more of the history of how this world came to be, the origins of the Rebellion and how Cassandra came to learn about her dancing powers, her training and upbringing by the nuns.

Throughout the story you get bits and pieces about the other Elven lords and I am hoping we are going to see more books about the other lords and ladies and how the rebellion brings them to their knees.  I definitely recommend this book if you love historical romances and fantasy.
