Book Blogger Hop September 2

Book Blogger Hop

This is a weekly event, hosted by Jen from Crazy For Books, where book reviewers and readers can connect to find new sites to read.  If you’re interested jump in and join the fun over at Crazy For Books.

Jen also asks that you answer a simple question along with the hop, here’s this weeks question:

Do you judge a book by its cover?

I am a little ashamed that covers do influence my first impression of a book.  It’s horrible I know but I think it’s human nature to be attracted to the shiny, pretty covers.  Like how could covers like this not catch up eye:

But I would not solely buy a book based on it’s cover.  It’s just if it has an eye catching cover I am more likely to pick it up and read the book blurb.  This is detrimental at times because I know I miss out on some great books.  Like it took me forever to pick up Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead just because I did not like the cover but once I did it turned out to be one of my favorite series:

Another book I would have missed if it weren’t for me reading about it on someone’s blog because I would never have picked it up based on its cover is Someone Named Eva:

So while I try not to judge a book by its cover it does affect what books I randomly pick up in book stores.

I think it would be difficult to say I never judge a book by its cover. I think all of us do to some extent. However, many times (particularly if I’m researching online) I’ll read the blurbs anyway and the cover won’t be the deciding factor in whether I purchase it or not.

We are visual animals and have many additional senses and faculties(experience, discernment, reading ability). I employ all the senses and faculties appropriate to make a choice. SO I look at the cover, read a sample, check reviews, read blogs, etc. So while I do judge books by their covers I also judge them in other ways as well.

Stopped on the hop, now following via GFC.
