I give this book 4 out of 5 stars

Description from While other teenage girls daydream about boys, Calla Tor imagines ripping out her enemies’ throats. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Calla was born a warrior and on her eighteenth-birthday she’ll become the alpha female of the next generation of Guardian wolves. But Calla’s predestined path veers off course the moment she saves the life of a wayward hiker, a boy her own age. This human boy’s secret will turn the young pack’s world upside down and forever alter the outcome of the centuries-old Witches’ War that surrounds them all.

I loved this book and could not put it down.  I was surprised to find this because although I’ve enjoyed werewolf books like Shiver and The Dark Divine I didn’t love them.  I’ll have to admit though I did not like the ending and can’t tell you why because I do not want to giveaway any spoilers.  You will just have to read it yourself and let me know what you thought.

The Characters

Calla was refreshingly strong being the alpha of her pack and it was interesting to see how she and her friends really behaved in the wolf pack manner.  I liked that she could kick butt and not totally rely on being saved by the mysterious hot guy or the strong, popular guy who has the hots for her.  Her brother was a nice mixture of sweet, protective and a little naive and I cannot wait to read more about her pack mate, Mason.  It’s not often that you read about a homosexual werewolf.

I love, love, love Ren!  Sure at times he comes across as overbearing but that is to be expected being an alpha male wolf.  I did not feel like he ever came across as an overbearing jerk though like a lot of the brooding male characters in a lot of paranormal books lately who is a jerk for the sake of being a jerk.  He’s hot, he’s sweet and he’s protective.  What more could a girl want?

And then we have Shay.  I kept waiting and waiting to see why I should like Shay and why Calla would be attracted to him but never got it.  He was more of the overbearing jerk who is always trying to put the moves on Calla and antagonize Ren and then has the nerve to accuse Ren of being too possessive and an ass.  His personality struck me pretty much as a spoiled brat even though we are supposed to be sorry for him for having such a rough life being brought up by an uncle who leaves him alone a lot and moves him all over the world.

The Story line

I loved the whole story line of werewolves who are Guardians of another race and then the question of if the Guardians masters really are the good guys they thought they were or if they were really slave masters who kill anyone who crosses them.  Then there is the question of just what is it that the Guardians are protecting on their mountain?  Andrea Cremer definitely keeps you guessing what will happen next and I always love it when you cannot predict every move of a story.  She has taken a unique perspective on the werewolf lore which is a refreshing change.

The Romance

I loved the chemistry between Ren and Calla.  You could feel the tension between the two whenever they got physical and I loved how as two alphas they had to jockey and learn how to compromise in order to work together and merge their two packs peacefully.  Even if Calla could not see it Ren was so sweet and protective of her and always seems to be trying to make her happy even when she throws it back in his face.

The romance between Calla and Shay on the other hand seemed so rushed and out of no where.  I know some people go for the whole love at first sight thing but I just was not feeling it between the two.  Like I mentioned above Shay was such a jerk that I really did not see what attracted her to him.

Overall, this is a must read book especially for all those paranormal YA lovers out there. If you read it let me know are you team Ren or team Shay?

Great review, I agree almost word for word. I’m definitely Team Ren and it makes me sad to think I might be rooting for the wrong team?? I really hope not!

I really need to read this one it seems. I haven’t read that many werewolf books yet, though I did love Shiver and Linger.

I’m not that big on omg love at first sight type relationships either.

Team Ren all the way! I completely agree, Shay came off as a jerk who was cruisin’ for a bruisin’ :D ha!

I completely agree with everything you wrote, and I am Team Ren all the way, my heart broke for him when she went after Shay and throughout the entire book I hated reading her interactions with him, but I loved Ren, and the way he was with Calla. I understand that Shay represents freedom and what not for her, but I think her and Ren are just sooo right for one another and if she just got over herself for a minute she’d realize that she loves Ren :)
