Summary from Goodreads.com:

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father–an elusive European warlock–only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Witches, vampires and a gorgeous warlock?  What’s not to like?  I have had this book on my shelf for almost a year now and never picked it up for one reason or another.  Rachel Hawkins is coming to town for a signing next month so I finally picked it up and what an awesome read! I kept telling myself I needed to get to bed but I could not stop reading this one so I ended up staying up late to finish it.

Sophie was one of those characters that you have to love because she’s not gorgeous, she’s not perfect at everything she does and she’s not 100% bitchy or sweet. In other words she is your every day teenager that comes across as totally rea, you can relate to and feel sorry for as she struggles to deal with her powers and being at this new school.  Archer, the gorgeous warlock, is everything you could want in one of the potential romantic interests.  He’s hot, he’s sweet and he has secrets that have yet to be revealed.  I say one of the potential romantic interests because there is this other gorgeous guy on campus, the groundskeeper named Cal.  Nothing has happened yet but I have a feeling that he and Sophie are going to have something going on at some point in the next book.

As for the enemies Sophie picks up during her first week of school, they remind me of the witches from that old movie, The Craft.  In the scene where they try to recruit Sophie I was totally picturing the scene from the movie where the three witches are floating in the air, cackling as they try to intimidate the fourth witch who stands up against them.  There actions sort of mirrored what I recall from that movie.  Then there is the mysterious ghost that Sophie keeps seeing around the school.  She just gave me the creeps and raised goosebumps on my skin.

The story was exciting and while I had an inkling about some things for the most part you are kept guessing what was going to happen next.  I love when a story grips you like that and is somewhat unpredictable.  It just makes it that much more of an enjoyable read.  The only issue I had with the book was that the ending seemed too easy.  I was expecting more of an epic battle.  Still I cannot wait to dig into Demonglass!

Wow, what a great review! I’ve been hesitant about this one for a while because it didn’t caught my attention much, yet most readers seem to really enjoy it! And I loved the Craft when I was younger – I really need to watch it again!

This is another book I loved! I liked all of the characters and the plot. Not hard to see where things were going at times (as you mentioned) but overall I didn’t mind. It was a fun read.
