I give this book 3 out of 5 stars

Summary from Spirit White has survived from a deadly car crash that has killed her mother and father and her sister. She has been discovered by a school with special talents, called magic. A couple of months after staying, people begin to disappear, some vanish to be never seen again, so Spirit and her new friends begin the investigation. But will they find out the truth of what is going on? Or will Spirit and her friends suffer a terrible fate from which they don’t know about yet?

I did not realize for the longest time that Mercedes Lackey had a young adult book out.  I’ve been reading her Valdemar series for years and if I ever get into a reading rut she is one of my go to authors.    So when I saw Legacies I jumped on it.  Unfortunately this book did not live up to my expectations.  While it was not a bad book it there was not much originality to it.  In fact, there were so many similarities to books like Harry Potter even the characters themselves make several references to how their school is like Hogwarts or they are like Harry Potter.  I did not really connect with Spirit but I did like Burke who has the ability to pick up any weapon or form of fighting and quickly become an expert.   Spirit’s other friends-Adelaide, Muirin and Lachlan show some potential but none of them really grabbed me either.

That said who the bad guys are has really peaked my interest.  There’s something strange going on with the headmaster of the school and his assistant but some characters are so obviously made out to be the bad guys that I just feel like there must be a twist.  The true purpose behind this “orphanage” /school is still unknown but you have to wonder if it’s for good or evil purposes as most of the teachers appear pretty crazy.  The one part of the story that surprised me was the plot line about the disappearing students.  There was so much build up and anticipation and then the ending felt so anti-climatic.  I was expecting some sort of epic show down  but I did not feel like we really got that.

Still being a first book in the series while not mind blowing it did pull me in enough to want to read the next book.

I have total envy of you getting a review copy of this book. I’m an enormous Lackey fan! :) I’ve seen a couple of reviews of this one so far, and all of them seem to be adding up to the fact that while it may be a bit fluffy, it’ll still be a fun read. I’m looking forward to getting a copy of my own!

Nice! I was looking at my Lackey pile the other day thinking I seriously need to read something by her… She has so many books it is a bit overwhelming!

Bibliotropic-I got lucky and saw it at NCIBA and they were trying to get rid of books by the end of the conference. I have to start book 2 soon!

Kailana-yes! She is awesome but I definitely suggest starting with her Valdemar books first. Talia’s story is one of my favorites.
