Q&A With Julie Kagawa Celebrating The Iron Knight + Giveaway!

November 3rd, 2011 by Debbie's World of Books

I was over the moon when I got a chance to read The Iron Knight because not only do I love this series but I am totally #TeamAsh and could not wait to read more of his story.  To make things even better I was given the opportunity to host a short Q&A session with Julie Kagawa!

When writing about the Fey, there are a lot of tricks and loopholes involved, especially where Grimalkin is concerned. How do you manage to keep them all straight?

Thankfully, my husband is very good at catching inconsistencies.  He is the first to read the finished book, and will always tell me if something doesn’t work or make sense.  (He’s also threatened to rip the semi-colon key off the keyboard, for all the semi-colons he’s had to take out, lol!)

Do you find it harder to write battle scenes or love scenes?

Oh, love scenes, definitely.  I have such a hard time with romance, believe it or not. Give me a good sword fight or bloody, violent battle any day.

Loved reading the story from Ash’s point of view. Was it difficult to switch from writing from Meghan’s perspective to Ash’s? Did you find yourself having to edit feelings writing as a female lead to a male lead?

I was much more cognizant of the fact that this was a male POV, not a female’s, as I was writing the book.  Ash isn’t very touchy-feely and tends to be very pragmatic, looking at things with logic, not emotion.  Someone mentioned that this was more of a “boy’s book,” and that Ash and Puck never sat down and had a heart-to-heart talk.  But that wouldn’t fit with either of their characters; they’re more the type to punch each other in the shoulder and say “get over it.”

Thank you so much Julie!  I cannot wait to read the next adventure.

Julie Kagawa

Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, when she was nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish and the odd eel.

When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks is at an all- time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyperactive Papillon.

My favorite character is Meghan because she has shown how strong she is by overcoming trials and tribulations since the very beginning. From when she found out about not being completely human to having her brother kidnapped to learning how to harness iron magic without it overpowering her. She has shown courage and strength by just being herself and dealing with everything that came her way the best way she knew how with all the support of friends and allies made along the way.

I like how Ariella is an alternative character to Meghan. It’s good to have another character to zoom out on Puck and Ash.

I think if Ash and Puck has a heart-to-heart, one would end up dead :)

Grim is going to have to be my favorite– he’s so snarky, but he always seems to come through :)

Well, I have this little OCD problem where I won’t read a book until all the books in the series are released, so it’s hard to pick a favorite character when the haven’t read the other ones (even though they’re all sitting patiently on my bookshelf glaring at me to read them).
But I must admit, Ash is my new favorite name for a guy. So mysterious yet almost fragile. Cannot wait to read these books and break the anticipation!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

Wow, I’d have to say Puck or Meghan. Puck is so funny, always joking but we see he has a heart too. Meghan is like the main girl, the star, she’s grown to adapt and become a huge part of the Fey world. She’s like, my book role model
