My book reviews, book news & random rants

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

Looking Back at 2011

2011 saw quite a few changes for me both on the blog and life in general.  First off my blog got a new look which I was very excited about and I’ve slowly begun to start accepting review books again.  I had stopped for awhile after my son was born because the two kiddos just kept me too busy and then with my husband being deployed and working full time something had to give.

2011 also brought a new frugalness to my life as prior to his deployment my husband was unemployed for 14 months and now that he has returned is once again on the job hunt.  So I turned to couponing (not extreme couponing! for those who have seen that show) to help make ends meet.  It amazed me how much money we used to waste.  That took up a lot of my time as I figured out how that worked but now that I got the hang of it and am pretty well set for 2012 I’m hoping to re-dedicate some of that time back to blogging.

That said I also started a new blog in 2011!  Non-Creative Mom is where I’ve started focusing my children book reviews, bargains geared towards families with kids, great recipe finds, book related activities and other activities I do with my 4 year old and 17 month old.  I’ve had a blast starting it up and hope some of you will stop by and visit.  My main motivations were that as my daughter got older she loves reading and I’ve had friends asking for suggestions for kids around her age, I’ve also discovered Pinterest which has all sorts of amazing ideas of things to do and really just to have an outlet for all the fun I’m having finding new ways to explore with the kiddos.

Top Reads of 2011

This year I finished a total of 122 books.  Here are some of my favorites (you can see all the books I’ve read in 2011 here):

Great Author Finds of 2011

I’ve really tried to branch out and try new authors and have found some new favorite this year.  If you haven’t checked out their books yet I definitely suggest you do:

  • Jonathan Maberry *thriller, suspense, zombie* (I’ve read a couple of his books before but he really blew me away with his YA series and Dead of Night)
  • Lisa Renee Jones *Paranormal romance* (I’ve read the first two books in her Zodius series and love them!)
  • Leigh Michaels *Romance* (She has been on my To-Read list for ages and I finally picked up a few books by her and they are amazing.)
  • Rachel Hawkins *YA* (I’ve been on the hunt for other awesome YA authors after finishing the Vampire Academy & Mortal Instrument books and Rachel Hawkins quickly became another favorite.)
  • Iris Johansen *Mystery* (It’s been awhile since I’ve really gotten into a mystery series but after reading one of her books I just had to read more. Her books are so addictive!)

What’s to Come in 2012

Like I mentioned earlier I want to focus more on my blog, getting involved again in the book blogging community and hopefully attending at least one book conference.  I’m also going back for my MLIS certification since it’s been about 7 years since I first earned my MLIS and so much has changed.  I’ve been working in software and things are up in the air so I am hoping that opportunities may arise to focus on gaining a librarian position.

I want to thank those of you who have stuck with me through the years and welcome any new readers.  I know I’ve been neglectful of my blog and hopefully will rectify that this coming year.  Please leave me any comments/suggestions you may have about the blog, what you want to see, etc.  Hope you all have a Happy new year!

FYI: For those who follow me in Google Friend Connect, I’ve heard that it will stop working with WordPress sites early next year so please follow me via email, RSS or any other method if you want to stay in touch.

I hope that you will be able to visit a Book Con next year. I was at BEA this year for the first time and it was so amazing! Apart from the amazing books, but also meeting so many great Bloggers!

(and yes, GFC will discontinue for Non-Blogger Blogs, I subscribed to your Feed now)

I did not know couponing could save so much money! Granted, I don’t have kids or anything, but I like the idea of not wasting money,

I hope 2012 brings you joy and excitement and wonderful new reads.

Danny-I really want to go to BEA. I’ve planned on it for 2 years now and something has always happened :(

April-same here. It was only my husband losing his job that prompted me to look into it. That and the price of diapers. lol.
