Series: Book 1 of the Covenant series

I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars

Summary from The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem–staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

The cover is what first drew me to this book and the synopsis sounded intriguing.  I finally decided I had to sit down and read it despite not seeing much about it around the blogosphere (possibly because I’ve fallen so behind on my Google Reader).  I’m finding it really hard to decide how I felt about it.  It reminded me so much of one of my all time favorite series, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, that I want to say I enjoyed it more than I really think I did.  Or maybe I enjoyed it less because I kept comparing it to Vampire Academy?  Alex is pretty much Rose Hathaway.  She’s a kick ass fighter who got torn away from her schooling and now has to catch up with the help of a sexy teacher who she is undeniably attracted to.  While having a reputation due to killing two daimons while “on the outside” she is also know for her attitude and trouble making streak.  Really Rose with a different name.

Then there is Aidan who is pretty much Dimitri minus the accent.  Of course I loved Dmitri so couldn’t help but fall in love with Aidan.   His skill, looks and protective streak mixed in with his unusually conservative and maturity streak due to having lost his parents early on and having to raise his younger brother makes him undeniably attractive.  Of course like with Rose and Dmitri there are outside factors that make it forbidden to be together. I can’t wait to see how they will face down the obstacles to a possible relationship since this is more than just a student/teacher relationship but rather a legally forbidden relationship.

Alex’s friend, Caleb, was another favorite of mine.  He’s the perfect side kick and pal without having the added complication of being in love with Alex.  I was really happy the story didn’t go that route and make him pining after Alex and instead having him purely as the supportive friend.  The other key male character was Seth who honestly I just couldn’t get into.  His arrogance turned me off and for most of the story he doesn’t seem to care at all about Alex other than she’s a nuisance because she’s obviously the reason he was pulled away from other more important tasks.  Even when he finally shows that maybe he’s not a total douche bag it comes out of the blue and I found it hard to swallow.

Still despite the similarities or maybe because of the similarities to Vampire Academy I will be continuing this series.  I’ve been dying for more of Dmitri and Adrian seems like he’s going to fit the bill nicely.

I totally know what you mean about the similarities between Half-Blood and VA!

For me, I didn’t read VA until after I had already read HB so it was a bit hard for me to get into VA because I was like, “This is SO like Half-Blood! Alex and Rose are sisters from another….mistah? Mother? Author? And Aiden and Dimitri are basically the same dude!” But…I still love them equally! But as you get further into the series, the storyline changes a lot…so hopefully, your feelings for the books will change as you get futher in! :)

    Love your review!

Momo-lol. I guess it would be a matter of which one you read first. I am in love with the Vampire Academy series so I can’t wait to read the next book in this one to see the twists it will take. Thanks for stopping by!
