The Hunger Games Effect

June 7th, 2012 by Debbie's World of Books

Hunger Games: Katniss

I was flipping through the paper the other week and came across this interesting article, ‘Hunger Games’ sparks healthy hunger for archery and survival skills, in the San Jose Mercury.  It mentions that since The Hunger Games has hit theaters there has been a noticeable increase in interest in archery organizations as well as survival classes.  I thought it was interesting that the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas even have a Hunger Games program and one archery academy even hosts “Hunger Games” themed birthday parties.

I for one think that’s pretty awesome.  I still remember when I was younger go to summer fun programs and actually doing some archery activities.  I actually wouldn’t mind trying it again now.

I’ve also begun prepping a disaster kit for each family member not due to The Hunger Games but thanks to another book, Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer (an awesome YA book that you must read!) and then a little extra motivation from a TV show called Doomsday Preppers on the National Geographic channel.

One of the boys interviewed in the SJ Mercury article credits Robin Hood for his interest in archery.  So that got me wondering what other books, movies or TV shows have motivated people to either take up a new hobby or change some aspect of their life?  Have you made a change in your life due to something you have read or watched?

Here’s some other articles about The Hunger Games effect on archery:

“For archery, it’s huge,” Lorig said. “Archery is getting its break. It’s a unique sport, an awesome sport, a very old sport. I think it deserves this big break thanks to “The Hunger Games.”‘

“Katniss is so inspiring,” said Gabby Lee, who asked for archery lessons for her 12th birthday in February after reading the wildly popular trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

“I’m not very sportsy,” she said, but now she belongs to a youth archery league near her New Jersey home. “It feels really good because I’m usually the girl who sits and reads.”

I’m totally into getting emergency kits ready and storing extra food for emergencies (or if money becomes tight). That grocery store scene in Life as We Knew It totally freaked me out!

I heard about this phenomenon too! The last time I did archery was at a summer camp many, many years ago, and I totally sucked at it, LOL…but it’s fantastic to know that teen girls and guys are getting inspired by the Hunger Games series to try out a new sport!

My husband and I keep saying we should do this. Sounds like I need to watch this show and read Life As We Knew It.
