I give this book 3 out of 5 stars

Summary from Goodreads.com: In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

So this book has been on my to read list for years because everyone I know raves about it-blogging friends, book club friends, random people I ran into at the book store.  After squeezing in so many YA reads in such a short time for my class I needed a break from YA and decided to finally pick this one up (and finishing meant I have now read 5 of my Ten Books Sitting on My Shelf that I Will Read in 2012!).  But I reluctantly have to say while it wasn’t bad and I enjoyed reading it, especially after the first 1/4 which I really wasn’t into, it didn’t blow me away.  Maybe I went in with too high of expectations.

I never truly came to like Wrath as a character which is one reason I didn’t fall in love with the book.  Beth was an interesting character and but alone she wouldn’t have carried the book for me.  What I did really enjoy was the world building and the rest of the brotherhood.  I found the world of lessers, vampires and the long history between the two groups fascinating and then you throw in the human cop, Butch, and you have all sorts of intriguing sub plots going on.  I knew this was the first book in a long series so it did create some anticipation in me to find out what will happen in the later books.

My favorite part of Dark Lover was undoubtedly the other brothers.  I loved the banter between the brothers and Phury and Rhage in particular caught my eye.  So although this book had a slow start for me I am definitely interested in continuing with the series.

I won this book(translated version) from a Norwegian publisher once and I still haven’t read it. It sounds a bit like you had the same kind of experience with this book that I had with ‘Moon Called’ by Patricia Briggs. I don’t think I’ll move it up my tbr pile just yet.

Funny you mention Patricia Briggs since she is another author I have in my tbr pile because so many people raved about her.

That happens to me sometimes, when people rave about a book so much and then you read it and feel a bit “meh” about it.

But I hope you continue to read the series. It’s one of my favorites. I’ve been reading so much YA that I hadn’t been able to catch up with the last couple of books but I will be soon. I’m in need of something different.
