BBAW: Interview with Once Upon a Story

September 10th, 2012 by Debbie's World of Books

BBAW 2012

I love participating in BBAW each year and one of my favorite parts is finding new, awesome blogs.  I am lucky enough to have Maria from Once Upon a Story here today and I am in love with her blog.

I am so excited to have you on Debbie’s World of Books today!  I love your blog especially since I also have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and I also earned an MLIS degree.  :)

You mention having two young children and that you began Once Upon a Story because you have a passion for teaching children to read.  How do you find the time and balance writing your blog, taking care of the children and everything else life can throw at you?

Oh gosh.  I dunno, some days I think I do better at this than others.  I try not to spend a lot of time on the computer while my kids are up and running around.  I typically have a few posts rolling around in my head, but I don’t “work ahead” very often.  I will sit down and write them out during naptime (which amounts to about 1 hour a day), and at night, after the kids are in bed.  I’m not very good at “working ahead”, most of my posts are written the day they are posted.  Which means on those days that things are particularly busy or crazy (like the days that nobody naps), I usually don’t post anything.  Also, I’ve made the commitment NOT to post on the weekends, so that I can spend that time just being with the family.

I saw that you took time off from work to pursue a Masters degree in Library science. Are you currently a librarian? If so what’s your favorite part of being a librarian?  If not what would you most look forward to if you became a librarian?

That degree was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.  I’m still pleased and proud that I pursued it.  However, I’m not currently a librarian, at least not in the traditional sense.  I finished the program two weeks after my daughter’s first birthday. I thought I would be going back to work full time, but I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to stay at home.  I like to think that I’m still using my degree to offer literacy advice, book recommendations, and general book chatter on Once Upon A Story.  But what I miss most?  The connection between teacher and student.  I loved being able to turn my students on to a new book, author, or series, and then have them report excitedly back to me about their own reading.

What are some of your favorite things about writing your blog?

Meeting new people!  My blog is my connection to the literature world. I have the opportunity for discussion with other bloggers, teachers, parents, and publishers.  It has become my go-to for recommendations, ideas, and people who enjoy talking books!  Anybody with small children knows that they are endlessly entertaining in their own way, but adult interaction is a must.  Once Upon A Story is my lifeline to others as passionate about books as I am.

What are a few of your favorite blogs/websites to read?

There’s A Book and Book-A-Day Almanac for children’s literature.  Amalah and The Honest Toddler for mom-related laughs.

Ready for a lightning round?  What’s the first answer that comes to mind for…

What is your 3.5 year old’s favorite book right now?

Press Here by Hervé Tullet

What is your favorite book?

Anything by Sophie Kinsella (for those times when I need a guaranteed good adult read)

Favorite season?

 Favorite food?

Deep dish pizza

Book character (adult or children) you would most want to meet?

Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables.  And if I weren’t happily married, I’d love to hang out with Gilbert Blythe, too.  But don’t tell my husband, okay?

Thanks again Maria for stopping by!  It was great “meeting” you.

Lovely interview. The lightning round was fun and it’s great to see a conversation with another librarian who isn’t working in a library (like me).
