Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary from Neville Roscoe, notorious and enigmatic, lives resolutely outside society, bound only by his own code of honor – until challenged by his desire for the one woman he cannot have.

Miranda Clifford is a lady imprisoned by rigid respectability – until tempted by a passion beyond her power to deny.

Flung together in peril, through danger and intrigue, they discover a love impossible to ignore … or keep.

This book brought back all the factors that have made Stephanie Laurens older books favorites of mine.  I wasn’t sure which way my opinion would fall for this story after the disappointment over the Cobra Quartet books but I am glad to say since the Cynster Sisters series and this book have come out I feel like Stephanie Laurens is definitely back on track.

Roscoe just may be one of my favorite Laurens heroes.  Everything about him just hit the right note with me.  He was strong, smart and protective without being overbearing or stubborn just for the sake of being the man in a relationship.  I also have a soft spot for guys who play the dangerous or bad boy but it’s really to hide their hearts of gold.  Roscoe has done so much to protect his family and to help the less fortunate and it killed me that despite all that he wouldn’t be considered a proper husband for any lady of worth.

Miranda was also a great character who obviously has let a sheltered life but she is still stronger than she thinks.  I loved watching her grow and come into her own all the while not being stupidly headstrong just to prove she’s the boss of herself.   She will quickly endear herself to readers.

As for the plot itself I really enjoyed the mystery of who kidnapped Miranda’s brother and why.  There were times I thought I had it figured out only to second guess myself and then change my mind.  It did get pretty predictable towards the end but Laurens writing more than makes up for it.

Another wonderful addition to Laurens’ collection of books.
