Judging a Series By Its Covers

March 18th, 2013 by Debbie's World of Books

Judging based on its cover is always a topic of discussion amongst my reader friends and someone in my online book club asks if we do judge a book by its cover.  I have to admit I am guilty of being drawn in first by a gorgeous cover.  Don’t get me wrong, if a book comes highly recommended I will read it despite a bad cover but if going purely based off of browsing a great cover always catches my eye.

What about you?  What do you think of these covers? Have you ever picked up a series because of the covers drawing you in first?  Any series who have gorgeous covers but you found disappointing to read?

Some of my favorites:

The Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand

I really try NOT to do the “judge a book by its cover” thing but if you don’t know anything about the work/author, you gotta start somewhere, right? On cover alone, there’s really not one shown that I wouldn’t at least pick up for a looksie…of those I’ve read in the list, I LOVED MATCHED and all the covers…still need to catch up on my reading of the trilogy though. ^_^

Gina-I know, there are so many books out these days that unless I go in with a specific title in mind I browse for covers that catch my eye and then read the synopsis.

The covers for the Last Survivors series by Susan Beth Pfeffer really speak to me. I love the ominous presence of the moon. That and the titles make me want to know more. I might have to look at these books!

Kelly-it’s an awesome series! I’m glad the covers caught your attention.

I like that a lot of your selections have pretty dresses-that’s my favorite kind of cover!
