Psy-Changeling Mini Reviews

March 27th, 2013 by Debbie's World of Books

It took me a long time to read my first Psy-Changeling book, Slave to Sensation, but I fell in love with this series and read 5 or 6 of them in a week.  Needless to say I did not take the time in between to write reviews for each one.  I loved Slave to Sensation and Visions of Heat so you can take a look at my review for those but I wanted to catch up on the other titles as well before moving on.  I know these are a bit out of order because I had to wait on Caressed By Ice and Branded By Fire to arrive from so reviews of those will post soon.

Mine to Possess by Nalini Singh

Summary from Clay Bennett is a powerful DarkRiver sentinel, but he grew up in the slums with his human mother, never knowing his changeling father. As a young boy without the bonds of Pack, he tried to stifle his animal nature. He failed…and committed the most extreme act of violence, killing a man and losing his best friend, Talin, in the bloody aftermath. Everything good in him died the day he was told that she, too, was dead.

Talin McKade barely survived a childhood drenched in bloodshed and terror. Now a new nightmare is stalking her life–the street children she works to protect are disappearing and turning up dead. Determined to keep them safe, she unlocks the darkest secret in her heart and returns to ask the help of the strongest man she knows…

Clay lost Talin once. He will not let her go again, his hunger to possess her, a clawing need born of the leopard within. As they race to save the innocent, Clay and Talin must face the violent truths of their past…or lose everything that ever mattered.

I give this one 3 stars.

Unfortunately this one just didn’t grab me the same way the first two books did.  Talin was a little too weak for my tastes and there was nothing distinguishing about Clay to make me fall for him.  In fact, I enjoyed the glimpse we got of the Psy scientist that help Clay and Talin more than reading about the couple.  I couldn’t wait to keep reading the series because we get a hint that she and Dorian (who I want more of) are going to be hooking up.

Hostage to Pleasure by Nalini Singh

Summary from Separated from her son and forced to create a neural implant that will mean the effective enslavement of her psychically gifted race, Ashaya Aleine is the perfect Psy–cool, calm, emotionless…at least on the surface. Inside, she’s fighting a desperate battle to save her son and escape the vicious cold of the PsyNet. Yet when escape comes, it leads not to safety, but to the lethal danger of a sniper’s embrace.

DarkRiver sniper Dorian Christensen lost his sister to a Psy killer. Though he lacks the changeling ability to shift into animal form, his leopard lives within. And that leopard’s rage at the brutal loss is a clawing darkness that hungers for vengeance. Falling for a Psy has never been on Dorian’s agenda. But charged with protecting Ashaya and her son, he discovers that passion has a way of changing the rules..

I give this one 4 stars.

This book definitely got back on track for me as I adored reading about Dorian and Ashaya.  I felt for Dorian ever since his sister was killed and like I mentioned earlier Ashaya intrigued me.  She had all these different facets to her personality that kept you guessing as to what she would reveal next.  There were definitely some surprises revealed in this book that I enjoyed.  Not to mention that Ashaya has one freaky twin sister that was so unbalanced you never knew what she would do next.  Definitely a favorite so far!

Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh

Summary from A woman without a past becomes the pawn of the man who controls her future…

Dev Santos discovers her unconscious and battered, with no memory of who she is. All she knows is that she’s dangerous. Charged with protecting his people’s most vulnerable secrets, Dev is duty-bound to eliminate all threats. It’s a task he’s never hesitated to complete…until he finds himself drawn to a woman who might prove to be the enemy’s most insidious weapon yet.

Stripped of her memories by a shadowy oppressor and programmed to carry out cold-blooded murder, Katya Haas is fighting desperately for her sanity. Her only hope is Dev. But how can she expect to gain the trust of a man who could very well be her next target? For in this game, one must die..

I give this one 3 stars.

This one wasn’t one of my favorites either.  The world building was wonderful and so intricate that I was fascinated and can’t wait to learn more.  The romance was a little less endearing for me.  I never truly came to feel anything for Dev though I felt really bad for Katya. It wasn’t until the later half of the book where they are interacting more with my favorites from the earlier books that it really caught my interest.  I adored the ending though and can’t wait to read more.
