October 21st, 2013 by Debbie's World of Books

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week our topic is: Top Ten Unusual Character Names and/or Names I Loved

Have you found these days people are getting more and more crazy coming up with the most outlandish names?  Sometimes I read a character’s name in a book and think to myself that’s a really cool, unusual name or sometimes it’s more along the lines of what was the author thinking?!  Here is my list of unusual character names.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

1. Renesmee (Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer): this had to be my number 1 pick because it was the most horrible name!  I couldn’t believe Meyer was serious.

Seven Day Fiance by Rachel HarrisTaste the Heat by Rachel Harris

2-4. Cane, Colby and Sherry (Taste the Heat, Seven Day Fiance & ? by Rachel Harris): ok I know this really counts as three names but I wanted to mention them as a group because while not unusual by themselves I did find it neat when I read Harris’s inspiration for these siblings.  I didn’t notice until she mentioned that all the names are food/drink related.  Get it? Cane-sugar cane, colby cheese, sherry to drink?  Loved it when I found out!

By The Sword by Mercedes Lackey

5. Kerowyn (By the Sword by Mercedes Lackey): Fantasy books as a whole have unusual names as a given but I really loved some of the names Lackey used in her books like Kerowyn, Talia, Elspeth, etc.  I just love the whimsy of the names.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

6. Ponyboy (The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton): Some of the younger folks won’t recognize this book but think the original version of Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles.  Such a good book!  The names in this book were all unusual and fun.  There was Ponyboy, Sodapop, Dally (Dallas), Two-Bit Matthews and Cherry Valence.

The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkein

7-8. Legolas and Aragorn (Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein): I had to go a twofer here because I love both names and to be honest I never made it through the books but having Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom playing the characters aided in my fall for both characters.

The Awakening by L.J. Smith

9. Elena (The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith): This is one of those names I had to include because I fell in love with it when I first read this series decades ago.  I was convinced if I ever had a daughter I would name her Elena.

10. Damon (The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith): Again I fell in love with this name and thought my son would be named Damon. :)

I love your list. I am agree about Renesmee. I did not hate the name, but I think it was very strange name to call your daughter.

Where did all those crazy names in The Outsiders come from? Was there some sort of significance that I missed out on? I always wondered that. Soda and Ponyboy made my list this week too! And I DO NOT like the name Renesmee… that’s just bad!!

I hadn’t heard of many of these names before. But I totally agree with Renesmee, it’s such a weird name. And Elena is such a lovely name. I can’t believe I forgot to mention Legolas and Aragorn!

Thanks for stopping by my TT earlier!

Ah Ponyboy….that name brings back some memories. Great list!

  6. Reviews from a Bookworm

Some great names, agree totally about Renesmee as well. Seems she couldn’t come up with anymore strange names and just had to settle for shoving two of them together. Poor kid. My STS.

  7. Mary

Great list! I’m so glad you put the Robicheauxs on your list. I love Rachel’s books! And I love Legolas and Aragorn too. :)

  8. Brianna's Bookish Confessions

I have Renesmee on mine too! As well as Elena and Damon. Damon is becoming a pretty popular name! I keep finding it in books!

  9. Liesel Hill

I hated Renesmee too. Even Esmee wasn’t my fave. Gotta love LOTR names, though. Fantasy always makes for awesome, unique names. :D Great list!

Sorry I’m late visiting here. I have to agree with Renesmee, seriously??? And didn’t she have a similar awful name picked out if she had a boy?

Kerowyn is such a neat name I might need to read that book just for the name.

And I loved that you pointed out the great names from the Outsiders! One of my favorite books.
